Encore Stage & Studio Educational Programs:
Encore Stage & Studio offers learning opportunities for students in Grades Kindergarten through 12. The excitement of discovering the power of the imagination and how a story can be told on stage is emphasized for the youngest of students. Students then focus on the creative process; what can they create as a team? As students progress, Encore’s teaching artists ask them to make informed decisions to craft compelling scenes onstage. Techniques are then refined to help students to build confidence as performers and people and challenge them to practice thinking quickly and responding authentically. Encore’s classes are taught by professional teaching artists and lessons are designed to fit the skills and interests of the students enrolled. Encore regularly offers group theatre classes, special workshops on a variety of specialized topics for advanced students, and private instruction in the areas of acting, singing, and piano.

For Baby/Toddler – Preschool:

Share, grow and learn with your child during this special time in their life! Encore’s parent/caregiver classes will promote your child’s development and provide exciting enrichment. For our youngest students, we emphasize the excitement of discovering the power of the imagination and how a story can be told on stage. We then move forward by helping students to focus on the creative process; what can they create as a team? As students progress, we ask them to make informed decisions to craft compelling scenes onstage. We refine techniques, help our students to build confidence as performers and people, and challenge them to practice thinking quickly and responding authentically. All of our classes are taught by professional teaching artists, and lessons are designed to fit the skills and interests of the students enrolled. Arlington County Board’s Proposed Cuts Cause Devastating Outlook for County’s Longest Running Children Theatre

Arlington County Board’s Proposed Cuts Cause Devastating Outlook for County’s Longest Running Children Theatre
Arlington, VA – On February 23, 2019, Arlington County released its FY 2020 budget recommendations and the proposed cuts for local performing arts groups are dire. The proposed cuts eliminate the Scene Shop, Costume Shop, and most of the technical support programs that are crucial for access to the county theatres. In addition, one third of grants to Arlington’s beloved arts organizations will be cut, amounting to a loss of $70,000.
The proposed budget directly affects arts groups that serve Arlington’s diverse community, including The Arlington Players, Avant Bard Shakespeare Company, Dominion Stage, and Encore Stage & Studio. Every season, nearly 100 students utilize the Scene Shop to develop and hone technical skills, as well as learning teamwork and safety. 12,000 patrons experience and enjoy Encore Stage & Studio’s productions annually; 100% of Encore’s sets are designed and built in the Scene Shop. Encore’s ability to produce shows would be severely impacted and potentially eliminated if the proposed budget is approved. Encore is a nationally recognized, professionally-run program where children learn valuable life skills.
The Manager’s proposed budget will essentially eliminate the Space and Services Grant program that has taken decades to refine. Janet Kopenhaver, President of Embracing Arlington Arts, states, “Space and Services is one of the most unique grant programs in the nation and [is] the only area in which Arlington [rises] above neighboring counties to help the arts.”
The proposed cut to grants funding will decrease the already financially dismal grant program to pre-2006 levels. “Children deserve access to high-quality after-school arts programs.” stated Sara Duke, Executive Director. “Just as our children deserve access to parks and sports facilities, they also need access to places to explore creativity and self-expression. “Community arts groups, such as Encore, depend on this county grant funding to provide the highest level of care and service to local children and their families.
Students of Encore Stage & Studio recently shared at Arlington County Board’s public comments sharing. “County support for the performing arts has been critical to our longevity and growth,” stated Arlington High School student, Hannah Torma. “Doing theatre with Encore hasn’t just taught me how to project, enunciate, and act; it’s also introduced me to a community that has helped me learn important social and teamwork skills that are applicable in the real world.”
Encore Stage & Studio and Embracing Arlington Arts are hosting a meeting to discuss the devastating cuts and bring a focus to the arts in Arlington. The meeting will be held on Monday, March 11, 2019, 7:30pm at Encore’s Main Campus (4000 Lorcom Ln. Arlington, VA 22207). Arts groups, artists, arts supporters and all are welcome to attend.
