Meet 2022 Encore Cares Student Director: Gabby Wilson
Hello everyone! My name is Gabby Wilson, I attend Kenmore Middle School as an 8th grader. I’ve been working with Encore for many years, whether that means being a 5 year old in Encores summer camps or acting onstage in their mainstage productions. Over the years I’ve grown very fond of Encore and the experiences I’ve had there. I was recently Bat Mitzvahed, whenever a child gets Bar/ Bat mitzvahed they have to do a service project to give back to the community. A few years back, two other Encore participants did Encore Care projects for their Bar mitzvahs. Ever since I heard about this project, I’ve had my heart set on it. Encore is such a welcoming and happy place that I love to be part of, I’m glad to get the chance to give back to this amazing place.
What shows have you worked on with Encore (list cast and crew roles).
So far in my Encore career I’ve been a part of 8 mainstage productions. My cast roles include Toto in Enchanted Bookshop, a Squirrel in Narnia, Della Young in Enchanted Bookshop Christmas and most recently Blind Pew and Annie Bonny in Treasure Island. I also did backstage crew in The Hobbit as well as participating in front of house crew for Cinderella Comedia, Riley O’Brien and The Lost Leprechaun, plus Annie Jr. I definitely love doing all things theater but my favorite part of Encore is performing as an actor.
What has been one of your most memorable experiences at Encore?
I think some things that are really special at Encore are the memories and friendships you make. One thing that stands out to me was when I was in my first Encore show, The Enchanted Bookshop. I was one of the youngest people on cast. I was so amazed at being introduced to the theater. I remember looking up to the older kids and I gained a lot of knowledge from them. Not only was that show my first Encore show, it was my first anywhere show too! I think it’s awesome how at encore no matter your age, you are always learning. For example then I was learning where stage left is and now I’m learning more about things like timing and stage combat.
What skills have you gained in theater that will help you direct this production?
Because I’ve been able to work onstage, behind the scenes, and in front of the stage I believe what I’ve learned will definitely help me as a director. While rehearsing and pushing through long tech week hours I’ve learned what I like about rehearsal processes and what I don’t enjoy. Every director you will work with in the theater will have a certain distinctive style. As a 13 year old girl I definitely know my likes and dislikes. I will strive to do my best working with what I think would make me most successful, which I hope can transfer to you. I’d like to say that ive had many Encore experiences that will help me direct and lift this show higher.
In your own words can you tell us the story of Rainbow Fish and why you chose this play?
The Rainbow Fish tells the story of how a very arrogant fish becomes a humble swimmer. The Rainbow Fish is a gorgeous (and of course rainbow) and shiny fish, and he is well aware of his beauty and reminds everyone about his glamor. Other fish are awed by his presence but when they meet him and his cranky, self absorbed attitude, they quickly realize that beauty comes from within. Soon the Rainbow Fish realizes that it’s better to be kind. He goes on a search and then reaches his heart out to his neighbors. He apologizes for his past and is kind to the other sea creatures. He even demonstrates a big aspect of kindness : sharing. By sharing his most valuable items, his shiny scales. I chose this show because it teaches multiple life lessons and it’s good for a younger audience. It will also (hopefully) make you laugh.
Who are you presenting this production to and why is it important?
Regular mainstage Encore productions are usually shown to the community. The Rainbow Fish will also be shown to an elementary school extended day program. This is special to me because we are performing this production for kids who may not usually be able to see and experience theater. I also hope it can introduce Encore’s program to other families because Encore has most definitely changed my life in an amazing way. I want other kids and families to learn about this wonderful community.
What can our audience look forward to when they come to see the show?
If you are interested in seeing the show, for starters it would make me the happiest ever ;). At the show you should expect a quaint one act, one set show. It’s a family friendly show with laughs for anyone and everyone in the crowd.
Do you have tips for students at auditions?
I would be beyond delighted for you to audition. Here are some things I recommend for the most successful audition!
1. Be prepared: Come ready and with energy, make sure you’ve had a bite to eat and some water if possible.
2. Be in the best mindset possible: Stay positive and do your absolute best.
3. Stay focused as best as possible, the director wants to see how you work with others.
4. Act your best, I know this sounds kind of obvious but really, you should! Even if you mess up, do a movement wrong, flub a line, directors are more focused on how well you can act and project.
5. Have fun, enjoy yourself!

Meet 2022/2023 Arts Apprentice, Amanda Willis
This is a special season for us, as we have new Arts Apprentices joining the admin team! Meet one of our amazing arts apprentices, Amanda Willis!
Tell us about yourself!
Amanda: I just recently graduated from James Madison University with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Theatre Performance and Education. I was born and raised in a small town outside of Boston, Massachusetts so I grew up visiting Cape Cod and seeing theatre at the Boston Opera House. My whole family has been involved in the arts in one way or another, beginning with my Grammie on my mom’s side and grandpa on my dad’s side who were both professional actors!
Why did you apply for the Encore apprenticeship?
Amanda: I was looking for a great opportunity right after college where I could learn not only more about education, but also other processes that happen inside the theatre. I knew the position at Encore would allow me to develop a well-rounded passion for more than one department.
What shows, classes, or skills are you looking forward to learning during your time at Encore?
Amanda: I am looking forward to all the vast possibilities that will come to me this year! I began acting at the age of 5 so I especially enjoy getting involved in productions and helping any way I can with those. I am also looking forward to getting the privilege to teach a multitude of classes for all different ages. A skill I am especially excited to keep developing is my flexibility. Especially in the theatre and classroom, you really never know what curveball could be thrown your way so I would love to engage in situations that’ll keep me thinking and on my toes! Some of the best learning comes when you stray off schedule a little bit.
Can you describe your favorite theatre/performing arts experience and what made it so memorable?
Amanda: hat’s so hard! Something I really enjoyed was acting in my first show post-pandemic because it was so refreshing to be back in the theatre after 2 years of online performances. Theatre for me is all about community and working together as an ensemble. So being able to be back in person with everyone to continue to build art was amazing!
What’s your favorite play or musical as an audience member?
Amanda: I have 2 very different answers for this! One of my favorite types of theatre to sit in the audience for is anything that conveys an important message. I believe that theatre has the capacity to make real world change and so being able to watch a show with a really driven message leaves me thinking about that show for a long time. My second favorite type of theatre to see is any Disney musical because that’s what I grew up watching and performing so it will always hold a place in my heart. If I had to choose shows I’ve seen professionally that left me speechless it would be Hadestown for the incredible ensemble; and Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella for the design!
Why do you think performing arts are important for young people?
Amanda: The performing arts are so incredibly important for young people because they can find a community that accepts everyone for who they are and allows everyone to shine in their own way! Being in theatre growing up allowed me to find a home outside of home and truly made me the person I am today. Not to mention the real life skills that theatre teaches! Including public speaking, collaboration, creativity, and so much more.
What is your dream character role or dream production to work on and why?
Amanda: My dream roles in theatre would definitely be Cinderella in Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella and Anastasia in Anastasia.
What theme day should Encore have at the office? (Explain why)
Amanda: Encore should have different movie theme days where we pick a different movie each time and each pick a character from that movie!
Is there anything else you’d like to share with us?
Amanda: I <3 Encore!!

#FridayFive Series: 5 Reasons to LOVE Summer at Encore!
“What time is it? It’s summer time!” We’re belting out our High School Musical 2 summer anthem as we enjoy one of our favorite times of the year!
Summer camps are in full session right now and we’re having a blast! As part of our #FridayFive series, here are five reasons why we love summer at Encore!

The sweetest and saddest song. Little Annie dreaming about what her parents are like is definitely a tear jerker for a few. With Annie’s one and only dream being to have a family, the ending of the show truly makes you happy.

Meet Liv Wilson, Encore’s Education Programs Coordinator
There’s a new, yet familiar face in the Encore administrative team! Meet Encore alum (2009-2012) and our newest Education Programs Coordinator, Liv Wilson!
Please introduce yourself!
Liv Wilson (she/they) is a dramaturg, playwright and theatre educator based out of Washington, D.C. Their work has been seen at The Eugene O’Neill Theatre Center, Dramatic Question Theatre, Boise State University, The University of Texas at El Paso, The College of William & Mary and at The Premiere Theatre Playwriting Competition. Liv is the recipient of the Howard Scammon Prize for Drama and the Martin Jurow Theatre Arts Award for artistic excellence. She has worked as the dramaturg for Ford’s Theatre, Cadence Theatre Company’s Sitelines BLM series, and several independent works developed by artists across the country, including two new musicals at The Tank in New York City. They have also assistant directed two productions in the musical theatre intensive at Summer@Potomac. Led by the educational drive of dramaturgy, Liv has begun work as the Education Programs Coordinator at Encore Stage & Studio in Arlington, VA. Liv received their Bachelor’s degree in History from The College of William and Mary in 2021 and is a recent National Theatre Institute alum.
You’re an Encore alum! What was your first Encore production and can you share any favorite moments from that experience?
My first Encore production was Dracula. I was in fourth grade and only appeared to say one line in the third act and I thought I had made it to stardom. I so greatly admired Encore that I felt lucky to even be in the show at all. I remember looking up to the older kids in the production as an example of how to be a good performer and castmate. They made the show special because of their level of sincerity and dedication to the production and I wanted to be just like them. I also remember a distinct lack of hierarchy; adults treated every performer with the same compassion and respect, no matter your age, role, or experience. Similarly, there was no pretension between kids in the production, everyone was there to work together to create a piece they were proud of and we could not do that without every single person’s presence. Finally, I remember my parents coming to see all eight performances of a three act show solely to hear me say the singular line that led to my fame, “I’m Lisa, I am the daughter of a blacksmith”.
What other Encore shows did you participate in?
After my Dracula debut, I was in a few more Encore productions. I played Echo in Hansel & Gretel, Ivy Sweet (of the Historical Society) in Night at the Wax Museum, and a duckling in Charlotte’s Web.
What is your favorite role you’ve played?
Echo was probably the most fun role to play because there was so much room to make exciting choices and make it your own. Through rehearsals and working to find the character, Echo turned out to be a very sassy, vocal spirit that Hansel and Gretel had to figure out how to deal with on their journey. I also took it upon myself to bring in this gigantic blue and green fuzzy knit infinity scarf that I wore as a floor-length gown to get into sprite-like character. Thankfully, the costume designer, Deborah, had no qualms about the idea and I shuffled on stage fulfilling all of my feisty forest dreams for the role.
What brings you back to Encore and can you share what your new role is here?
Encore has always been the heart of Arlington to me. The way this organization brings the community together through inclusive performing arts and educational outreach is unparalleled. While looking to transition into theatre arts education, the welcoming spirit of Encore made returning feel like coming full circle in my artistic journey. So many of the values I hold as an artist were implanted here and still live in the mission of Encore. I am now the Education Programs Coordinator so I get the opportunity to teach at mini camps, summer camps, and school residencies as well as handle the logistics of coordinating staff, volunteers, and teaching artists for our other educational programming, including classes, enrichment, and TYA performances.
What have you enjoyed during your time on Encore’s staff so far?
Something wonderful about the environment of Encore is the constant willingness to think big, start new projects, and imagine new possibilities. For an admin staff of five, Encore is never at a loss for ideas or creativity. When someone has an idea, a spark for a new collaboration, partnership, or performance that will benefit the community we strive to serve, it is met with support and a “Let’s make it happen!” attitude. This spirit is what makes Encore an ever-growing, thriving organization that listens to the needs of their community and seeks to fulfill them in creative, innovative ways. I love being a part of action and mission-driven staff here at Encore.
Why do you think performing arts are important for young people?
The benefits of participating in the performing arts are bountiful. From confidence building to clear communication to effective collaboration, young people are able to learn skills through theatre that they will take with them into the world. In my own experience, I have always felt as though theatre was a place to belong, to be accepted. I know the impact the performing arts has had in my life; the friends I’ve made, the mentors I’ve met, the community created, and I hope to provide that same space for self-discovery, creative risk-taking, and joy for other kids. Especially in this time, when so many of us have missed out on the face to face connection for the past two years, it is vital for us to create these artistic, collaborative environments for kids to thrive.

Meet 2022 Intern Taylor Ballinger
We’re delighted to have students intern with us this spring season! Meet our latest and greatest intern, Taylor Ballinger!
Taylor Ballinger is a senior at Episcopal High School. She is from Washington, DC and began at Episcopal in 11th grade. In the fall Taylor will be attending Loyola Marymount University where she will be majoring in Theater Arts. Taylor first began acting at The Children’s Theatre Workshop at Howard University in elementary school. Since then she has participated in over 15 productions. Taylor is an active participant in her school’s theater program. She has experience in acting, choreographing, and directing. Outside of school Taylor has participated in Imagination Stage Performance Ensemble every winter 8th-11th. She is also a member of the John F. Kennedy Center Youth Council. She is working at Encore as a part of her school’s Senior Externship Program.
Why did you choose Encore for your internship?
I chose Encore for my internship because I wanted to work with a company that provides artistic opportunities to youth. I think working behind the scenes will help give me a well rounded learning about theatre.
Can you describe your favorite theatre/performing arts experience and what made it so memorable?
In the 10th and 12th grade I did Legally Blonde. They were my favorite for different reasons. In the 10th grade I made so many new friends and felt included throughout the whole process. I was able to work with really talented people, and it was a lot of fun to be able to put on that production. In the 12th grade, I took on a lot of leadership roles. In addition to getting a better role than I had in 10th grade, I was able to choreograph over three dances. I also helped out with costumes for many cast members. I also did a production of The Wolves the summer before 10th grade, and it was one of the most rewarding experiences. We put on the show in less than three weeks, and there was so much dedication from all of the cast members.
What’s your favorite play or musical?
I don’t think I have a favorite play or musical, but a few of my dream shows are Rent, Mamma Mia, and 13.
If you were a social media platform, which one would you be and why?
I think I would be Twitter because I have some amazing one liners, and I love it when other people get to hear them.
What are you most looking forward to learning with Encore?
I am looking forward to learning more about everything that goes into creating a production. As an actor, I often don’t think about the other side and I think this is a great opportunity to do that.
Why do you think performing arts are important for young people?
I think performing arts are important for young people because it gives them the freedom to express themselves without limits. I think the younger children start, the more likely they are to carry everything they have learned with them.
Meet 2022 Encore Intern Jo Massaro
Meet our 2022 spring intern, Jo Massaro! Look familiar? You may have seen her in our production of James and the Giant Peach in 2018 as the spider! Jo returns to us as an intern with the Encore team. Let’s catch up with her and see what’s to come with her time with us!
Tell us about yourself:
My name is Jo Massaro and I am a senior at The Madeira School. I have been involved in the preforming arts for as long as I can remember. I have been in countless play and musicals, including Encore’s production of James and the Giant Peach when I was in 8th grade, as well as recitals for singing and dance.
Why did you choose Encore for your internship?
I chose Encore because theatre has always been such a big part of my life. I really want to be involved in it in some way in the future. I chose Encore in particular because when I was in James and the Giant Peach aside from having a very valuable learning experience there was such a strong community among everyone there.
Can you describe your favorite theatre/performing arts experience and what made it so memorable?
I don’t think I have a favorite performance but I have two. It is between my middle school’s production of Beauty and the Beast in 6th grade where I was Lumiere because it was my first musical, or Madeira’s Production of Nice Work if you can get it this year because I had both official and unofficial leadership roles and I was the first time I really felt like a leader.
What’s your favorite play or musical?
It is hard for me to pick only one play or musical that is my favorite because there are so many great ones out there but I would say my favorite is probably Dear Evan Hansen followed closely with a tie for second by Wicked and Les Mis. My dream roles would be either Elphaba or Éponine. These are my favorites because they have such great soundtracks, and they are so emotionally charged. They always make me feel something.
If you were a social media platform, which one would you be and why?
I would probably say snapchat because you can connect with certain specific people or all your followers. I am a someone who likes to have personal relationships with people but I am also a very outgoing person who doesn’t hide who she is.
What are you most looking forward to learning with Encore?
I am very excited to learn more about the different the production etc. of putting on a show. I am very familiar with the actor process even a little with the director process because I took a directing class this year but I don’t know much about the other aspects.
Why do you think performing arts are important for young people?
I think preforming arts are important or young people because it gives them a creative outlet. It is not good for children to simply sit a classroom all day learning hard facts instead of learning how to be creative and express themselves.

It’s the first Friday of 2022 and we’ve got our #FridayFive New Year Resolutions for you at Encore!
#1 – Be a Part of Something New – Audition for our World Premier of Riley O’Brien and the Lost Leprechaun!
This world premier will be a memorable experience! Fully vaccinated students aged 9 and older are invited to audition for the cast and students 12 and older can interview for crew positions.

#4 – Become a Role Model and use your Leadership Skills – Apply for our Camp Counselor Positions!
Camp Counselors help make camp a smooth, successful, and fun experience for campers! Each day, counselors have the opportunity to lead or assist teaching artists with classroom activities including theatre games, warm-ups, and craft projects. Counselors may also help campers to rehearse scenes, learn choreography or movement combinations, or prepare for the final camp performances. Counselors also frequently take on administrative tasks, including helping to run check-in and check-out, preparing class materials, and setting up or cleaning up camp spaces. Counselors are expected to be punctual and fully present for each day of camp, and to model good behavior for campers. This is a very active and hands-on position. Camp counselors at these programs are expected to be proactive and look for ways to use their individual talents to help the camp’s artistic staff and contribute to the camp environment. Apply by February 28 for best consideration.
