Gobble Up These 7 November Highlights

Festive #FrontRowFriday, Encore fans! It feels like just yesterday that we were cheering on finishers at the Costume Caper 5K – the holiday season is officially upon us. We’ve had a month fuller than our bellies at Thanksgiving dinner, so let’s dive into some of our November highlights:
1) Late Fall classes kicked off!
November saw the start of our second session of 2018/2019 Encore theatre classes. We happily welcomed new families and teaching artists alike, ready to dive into a variety of topics ranging from stage combat to dance, to improvisation and theatre skills. Everyone is having a blast! You won’t want to miss out on what next session has in store.
2) Pirates and animals and skeletons, oh my!
November was a busy month for our Holiday Mini-Camp program, that’s for sure. Encore hosted three camps during school holidays with different fun themes: Pirates, Ferdinand, and Coco. The staff loves having campers around at Encore’s Main Campus – their energy and creativity are infectious! If you have students in grades K-5th, there isn’t a better way to play the day away when the kids are out of school. Register today to secure your spot on our next adventure!
3) Yo ho ho and a bottle of…eggnog!
Encore’s production of Jingle ARRGH the Way! set sail this month with a talented crew on board (and backstage). This holiday pirate musical spectacular opened to great reviews from DC Metro Theater Arts, Washington Family, and The Arlington Connection. This fun romp remains on the high seas for two more weekends, so don’t wait!
4) Forget Christmas in July…
…we’re all about summer in winter! Encore was excited to announce our first-ever Summer Camp Open House event which will take place on Saturday, January 5th. Come meet your camp directors, try out a sample class, and get registered for summer camp while taking advantage of our Early Bird pricing. With camps for ages 3 through 18, there is a camp experience for every young theatre-maker. Itching to know which Stage Door productions we’ll be producing this summer? Head over to our Instagram to get a hint or two!
5) A Grateful Season
‘Tis the spirit of the season! We would be amiss if we let this last Thanksgiving opportunity pass us by without giving major props to all of our participants, families, staff, donors, and volunteers. Without each of you, Encore would not be able to produce over 50 years of “theatre by kids, for kids.”
6) The Shop is Open!
From a ship full of pirates to a shop full of beloved characters – we were thrilled to witness the start of rehearsals for Encore’s next production, The Enchanted Bookshop. Feeling like you missed the boat? Fear not! Lace up your boots and string your bows as you prepare for Robin Hood auditions, December 11th and 12th.
7) “As if!”
Here at the Encore Main Campus we love any excuse to dress up. This month’s theme day took us back – not to the future – but to the 90’s! If you’re a lover of silly fun and team building, in addition to helping young people create great theatre, don’t be Clueless; check out our Opportunities page!
What a delightful start to the holiday season we’ve had! We look forward to celebrating this season of fun and togetherness with our whole Encore family at the theatre this weekend and next as we set sail with the charming and hilarious cast of Jingle ARRGH the Way!

Yo ho, yo ho, an Encore life for me!

A happy holiday #FrontRowFriday from Encore to all of you! We hope everyone is enjoying themselves over the holiday weekend, surrounded by loved ones and seasonal cheer. To help you stay in the mood, check out our interview with a few of the cast members from the good ship Jingle ARRGH the Way!
Encore: Introduce yourself! Who do you play in Jingle? How long have you been involved in theatre? In what other Encore shows or programs have you participated?
Bridget: Hi, I am Bridget! I play Swill the Pirate. I have been involved in theatre for about six years now. This is my first Encore show, but I have been in Encore’s Scenes for Tweens As You Like It as Phebe.
Kate: Hello! I’m Kate, and I play the role of Sharktooth. He is the fiercest pirate of the seven seas, and also has a secret Broadway aspiration. I have been involved in theatre for around a year now. My first musical was [Disney’s] The Lion King, Jr. with Encore in February, 2018. I have been in three shows since: Pinocchio as sassy Contessa Natasha the cat, a school production of Treasure Island, and Shrek, Jr. with Stage Door [Summer Camp] as Papa Ogre and then Fiona in later performance.
Vivien: Hi, my name is Vivien; I am an 8th grader from Arlington, but on the stage I am Pierre, French pirate chef! I have loved theater spectating and acting for as long as I can remember! My first role with Encore was Little Wolf in A Fairy Tale Christmas Carol and then last year as one of the 12 girls in Madeline’s Christmas. I’ve also participated in the Encore’s Stage Door camps the last several summers. I had a lot of fun playing Harry Macafee in Bye Bye Birdie this summer!
Encore: What’s your favorite memory from the Jingle audition process?
Vivien: My favorite part of the Jingle audition process was definitely getting to see all of my Encore friends at the auditions.
Bridget: My favorite memory is when I was in callbacks with Lily (Jeremy Jacob), when she was Black Beard and I was a pirate wanting to be on her crew.
Kate: My favorite memory from the Jingle audition process was realizing how silly this show was truly going to be! I went in expecting some hardcore singing because of the musical aspect of the show, but when I entered the audition room we started singing showtunes with pirate twists. I thought to myself, “This is gonna be a fun show regardless if I participate.”
Encore: Tell us a pirate joke?
Bridget: What is a pirate’s favorite letter? You would think it’s “R,” right? Wrong, it’s “C;” get it?
Vivien: Why did the pirates go to jail? They got arrrrrrested.
Kate: Where does a one legged pirate go to breakfast: IHOP!
Encore: What is your favorite part of the holiday season?
Kate: My favorite part of the holiday season is the time spent with family. I have a great family, and when we all come together to spend time without the distractions of ordinary life, it’s a hoot.
Vivien: The food! 🙂
Bridget: My favorite part of the holiday season is seeing all my family that I rarely ever see.
Encore: Is your character on the “Naughty” or “Nice” list? Why?
Vivien: My character is on the naughty list because Santa tried to hire him as his chef but he turned him down to work for Braid Beard (he never liked the cold).
Bridget: My character would probably fit on both: He would fit on the nice list because he helps all of his pirate friends better understand things. He would fit on the naughty list because he can’t really drive that well (he tends to run away with the wheel in his hands.)
Kate: Sharktooth is a really tough guy on the outside, but take off the eye patch and he truly is a “sensitive guy.” He is on the nice list; Santa has been a bit forgiving this year. Sometimes, when Sharktooth gets a bit carried away in show business, his kindnesses get put on hold.
Encore: Why should everyone come see the show?
Bridget: Everyone should come see the show because it’s all about the holidays. You learn the true meaning of Christmas, and, I mean, who doesn’t love pirates?
Kate: Everyone should definitely come see the show! There is something for everyone. The show is jam packed full of funny references. We even have a few special guests from the North Pole if you wanna put your Christmas list in early this year (maybe get in a good word with the big guy!).
Vivien: Come see the show because you will never see anything else that’s quite as festive.
Thanks so much for sharing your holiday memories, ladies! You’ve certainly gotten us in the mood for fun songs, charming hijinks, and, of course, pirates! Come join us in the audience of Jingle ARRGH the Way by purchasing your tickets online or by calling our Box Office at (703) 548-1154. Please note that we won’t be back to port until Monday, November 26th, after the holiday.

Joy in Numeral: An Encore Thanksgiving

Happy #TechTuesday, Encore fam! Shannon McCarthy here, reporting from my fun outpost between Education and Marketing. I’m in a prime position to share many highlights from Encore’s 2018/19 season so far. It feels like just yesterday that we were striking Seussical, yet somehow Thanksgiving is just days away.
As a musical theatre graduate, I often like to joke that an actor’s favorite numbers are “5, 6, 7, 8!” Luckily, we have many more amazing figures for which to be thankful this year. Read on for Encore’s joys, by the numbers:

74 Participants
Since the start of the 2018/19 season we have seen 74 individuals serve as actors, backstage technicians, and front of house crew. With only three shows under our belt so far (Ghostchasers!, A Sidewalk Stroll, and Jingle ARRGH the Way, it’s wonderful to see such a broad and diverse group of people coming together to create theatre!
1,430 Tickets
In just two short months of performances, we have welcomed 1,430 patrons to an Encore show. From the youngest of theatre goers to birthday parties and Scout troops, our season has something to offer everyone! Will you be adding to our numbers in December? Get your tickets for Jingle ARRGH the Way today!
10 New Faces
Since the start of our season, we’ve had the pleasure of working with 10 new teaching artists. These talented professionals are joining us for after-school enrichment classes, Saturday classes, and private lessons. We are so excited to welcome them to the Encore family – don’t miss out on your chance to work with them this year!
Our seven full-time staff members (and two rad apprentices) are the wizards behind Encore’s proverbial curtain. Every email, rehearsal schedule, lesson plan, and more goes through one or more of these wonderful humans. Would you like to get in on these #SquadGoals? Check out our Opportunities page!
63 Costumed Capers
Despite an ill-timed rainstorm, 63 runners and volunteers came out for Encore’s 3rd annual Costume Caper 5K. The optimism, creativity, and good-natured spirit of this group is a prime demonstration of the superb community surrounding Encore as an organization. We’re so thankful for all of our participants, volunteers, and donors!
25 Adventures
With the holidays upon us, we’re already looking forward to the opening of summer camp registration. Early Bird pricing begins on January 1st, so mark your calendars! With 25 different camp themes offered over the summer, 2019 is waiting with a theatre adventure for you. Still weighing your options? Join us on Saturday, January 5th for a free Summer Camp Open House!
Such wonderful figures, right? We just couldn’t keep them (or our gratitude) hidden! From all of us here at Encore, we wish you a safe and happy holiday this week and we can’t wait to see you soon!

Celebrating the Catalogue for Philanthropy

Every four years, Encore applies to the Catalogue for Philanthropy for Greater Washington. This year is our third time being recognized as #OneoftheBest nonprofit organizations in the D.C. area.
Hi, all! Your friendly neighborhood Development Associate, Rosemarie, here. I had the pleasure of filling out our application to the Catalogue for 2018-2019 and have seen first-hand what being a part of the Catalogue means. Here are three reasons why we are honored to be in the Catalogue for Philanthropy.
1) The Blue Seal
Fun fact: I interned the summer of 2015 at Encore (here’s proof), the last time we were selected by the Catalogue. That meant that everything I designed or created had to have this blue seal on it. But what does it mean? Every time you see this logo, it means that an outside organization who specializes in nonprofit organizations, took a fine-toothed comb to a bunch of groups and found Encore excellent. The Catalogue for Philanthropy for Greater Washington’s vision is to build, “a stronger, more resilient community, here, where we live.” The Catalogue believes that Encore is part of the fabric of that community. We are honored to be a part of the Catalogue and Encore shares that vision. From the summer I interned to now, Encore’s leadership in Northern Virginia has only grown. When I see the blue seal, I think about Encore’s scholarship programs, outreach initiatives, and the mentorship I see every day in rehearsal. I am proud to work for such a community focused organization.
2) Connecting Passionate People with our Mission
The Catalogue for Philanthropy is a place where people can find nonprofits doing great work in their own backyard. Knowing that an organization is a part of the Catalogue, gives peace of mind to people who are looking to make an impact with their time or with their dollars. With so many wonderful organizations serving a myriad folks, people can use the Catalogue to find a group that aligns with their passions. Each organization in the Catalogue receives a webpage (here’s ours) and becomes listed in their physical catalogue that gets mailed to over 10,000 people. How cool is that?
3) Training for Encore’s Staff
No, we are not training for next year’s Costume Caper with the Catalogue. But, they do offer seminars for all facets of nonprofits. Aileen and Shannon on our Marketing Team can go learn about how other groups utilize social media. Sara and I can learn about trends in grants or fundraising. That means all of our wonderful, fun, and intelligent staff members can do an even better job serving Encore and the kids in our area. And our wonderful apprentices, Caolan and Alana can further their learning and dive deep into any of the subjects offered. My favorite workshop from last year was about how to write thank you letters to donors. It helped me connect the words on my computer to the impact of the donor’s contribution. The workshop helped put into perspective that a great letter can communicate how one donation makes a difference for our organization.
I love seeing how much the D.C. region cares from the organizations to the donors and even the Catalogue! If you want to show that you care, make a gift to Encore today to share the power of children’s theatre with the people in your neighborhood.

#StudioSaturday: Combat Instructor Ian Claar

Today we’ve got another dose of #StudioSaturday for you, friends! Our Late Fall classes are now underway: We’re chatting with Stage Combat teaching artist Ian Claar about the importance of the arts education for youth.
Encore: How long have you been working with Encore? In which capacities?
Ian: I have worked with Encore since 2 years now! My first show was A Fairytale Christmas Carol, for which I was the lighting designer. I have mainly worked on the Production side either designing lights or assisting in designing lights. [Click here to check out our lighting-focused interview with Ian!]
Encore: What’s the most valuable skill that theatre has taught you?
Ian: Theatre teaches so many valuable lessons, but one of my favourite take-aways has been critical thinking and problem solving, and composure under stress. Theatre requires so many things to happen quickly and precisely, with a cast and crew that can adapt just as quickly when things go wrong.
Encore: Why is arts education important for young people?
Ian: Arts education can encompass so many valuable lessons and skills. From communication, to problem solving, to hands on knowledge of building and electricity. The physical awareness of acting and dancing, and the self care that performers learn to take care of their mind and body. The arts provide an insight into our own culture and history and that of those different than us. I can’t think of a reason NOT to expose young people to the arts as much as possible.
Encore: Complete this sentence: “I’m most looking forward to teaching _____ because _____.”
Ian: I’m most looking forward to teaching Stage Combat because it is a valuable acting tool that promotes safety and consent in the artistic world.
Are you itching to put your stage combat skills to the test? Audition for Robin Hood, December 11th & 12th! Not sure how you’ll fit into the Merry band? Shake off your nerves with Encore’s pre-audition workshop on Saturday, December 8th.
Not a fighter? Fear not! Encore’s Winter classes have something for everyone: dance, comedy, adventure, and more! Visit our Class page to check out our offerings and enroll today.

All About Community: Encore’s Healthy Play Initiative

This #FrontRowFriday, we’re getting into the spirit of the season: community, sharing, and giving. We want you to hear from four of our teaching artists that work with the Healthy Play Initiative (HPI), a program created in 2016 to partner with the Arlington Food Assistance Center (AFAC) to provide enriching creative play for the children of families experiencing food insecurity in Arlington. Read on to find out, from those closest to the program, just what makes HPI so special.
Mara Stewart, Teaching Artist: HPI is one of my favorite classes to teach. I feel like I always leave with a smile and a new experience. It has taught me so much about communication. Even when we can’t speak the same language, we are able to create a positive experience and learn from one and another. For most of the kids, this is their first time in a classroom setting. Healthy play focuses on engaging and dynamic activities. We sing, we dance, we color, we play outside, and we learn about healthy food choices. We focus of transitioning from one activity to the next, sharing and expressing ourselves. This program helps us meet kids in the community that we otherwise might not ever get to know. It is an amazing experience to see these children week after week and watch them grow. The first day we meet a child, they often don’t participate or speak and after a few weeks they blossom. They are engaged, singing and are excited to come to HPI and to me that is the best part.
Caolan Eder, Arts Apprentice: To me, HPI is all about community. The children who participate get a chance to play together in a safe setting and make new friends, learning to cooperate in a group as they prepare for the structured environment of school. The program also helps with communication skills. Many of the children live in non-English-speaking homes and struggle to connect with people outside of their families, so finding new ways of interacting really expands their worlds. I remember well how one child’s whole face lit up when she and I discovered that we spoke a common language and could explain ourselves to each other.
The parents and caregivers build community through HPI, as well. In addition to giving them a breather from the responsibilities that come with raising a family, the program allows adults to form a network of people with shared experiences.
Madaline Langston, Education Programs Manager: HPI has made me more patient. Most of the children that I have had the pleasure of serving are learning English and are trying to do their very best. In the classroom, we focus on listening, focus, and engaging students’ motor skills. HPI is a way to provide social interaction with peers. They learn how to make friends. When I first meet most of our HPI participants, I’ve noticed that they usually only interact with their families or friends. I recall one young boy who had just arrived from Peru and did not speak English. I used my cell phone to translate Spanish to him and he smiled and then slowly pronounced Spanish words to me and I spoke to him in English. So cute and funny at the same time. From that point on, he came to the classes with a smile on his face.
Alana Gibson, Arts Apprentice: [Through HPI,] I’ve become more attentive to the children as people and not just children who are unaware of their surroundings and circumstances. HPI is such a meaningful program because, for the most part, this is the only exposure to English speakers that the children get if they don’t go to classes. It’s also meaningful to Encore because it makes us more culturally aware and understanding which helps us standout in the region and theater community. A few weeks ago, at the Arlington Mill location, we had a pair of siblings that came in because they didn’t have school. Mara, the lead teacher, told me that, just a year ago, these siblings spoke almost no English. I was completely shocked because if she hadn’t told me that, I would have never known. So I’m sure that them coming to the program in combination with their language class helped with this amazing feat! In the classroom, I try to focus on being caring, but also keeping some structure. Most of the children are in the house all week with a parent so I want them to have a chance to run around, but I also want to start to help them get the understanding of how a classroom would work at a real preschool. I’m hopeful that HPI plays a real role in preparing these kids for school as they grow older.
It’s through the generous support of our donors that we are able to bring programs like the Healthy Play Initiative to our community here in Arlington. We believe that this type of outreach and engagement is essential for our mission of bringing “Theatre by kids, for kids” to all types of children and families. The empathy, problem solving, and creativity born in the classroom extends far beyond remaining active in the arts – the skills gained through theatre education can last a lifetime. As the holiday season approaches, make an impact in the lives of Arlington children by making a donation today.
