#TechTuesday Stay Curious with Circulo/Circle!

Today on the Front Row blog, we’re exploring Encore’s latest show, Circulo/Circle. We had the chance to hear from some of the actors and the director about the production and we’re happy to share their answers with you!

Encore: What would you say is the primary lesson of this piece for our Theatre for the Very Young series?

Rachel Hynes (Director): The primary lesson is for kids is to explore and play! Circles can be anything! I think there’s a lot in the play for adults as well: elements of a STEAM education and the idea that exercise and toys don’t have to be fancy to be fun.

Anderson Wells (Actor): Imagine, explore, and create. A plastic circle can be so many things if you allow yourself to see possibilities. Start discovering and let the ideas flow!

Ruth Elizabeth Diaz (Actor): Always be curious and explore. If you try something and it didn’t work you, try a different way.

Encore: Please describe any of the show’s elements that are specifically designed for preschoolers.

AW: A lot of the discovery that we work with centers on creating ways to have fun with a very simple object. Preschoolers can find ways to make games with friends using the world around them. As our society trends more and more towards getting their entertainment from technology, we forget that there are ways to have fun that don’t involve screens. Our show helps young people see the fun of creating your own entertainment.

RED: We have created the show with minimal language and mostly movement. And the end of the show we invite anyone who would like to, to come play with the hoops and explore.

RH: We love our brightly colored hula hoops! Exploring what these circles can do will exercise your baby’s body and mind.

Encore: What’s been the best part of the rehearsal process? What about the most challenging?

RED: Devising the show has been my favorite and the most challenging for me. I have only experience working on scripted shows before, so getting a chance to create along with other artists this way has been fun. This is also my first show outside of college!

RH: The best part of the rehearsal process is learning to play like children. As adults, we have to pretend that we don’t know what hula hoops are and explore them for the first time all over again. That’s the hardest part has been watching hooping tutorials and trying to learn the tricks. We’ve hit ourselves in the head with hoops more than a few times.

AW: I’ve greatly enjoyed being in a rehearsal room where truly no choice is “wrong.” Rather, due to time restraints we had to simply work with the choices that were strongest. Without the fear of making the “wrong” choice, I felt so much more free to make any choice that came to my mind. I found I was most challenged by the hula-hooping itself as I didn’t know how to before rehearsing this show but with every rehearsal I am getting better and better.

Encore: What do you enjoy most about performing for young people?

AW: It is incredibly rewarding to see moments of discovery or amazement on a young person’s face. Work like this makes stories come to life, which is not something they get every day and I’m so glad to bring something new to them.

RED: I enjoy their honesty. Children have a strong sense of knowing how reality works while still discovering it themselves. When grown-ups try to jump ahead a couple steps, children will always tell you, “That’s not how it works!”

RH: I love creating theatre for young people. It’s a great to get in touch with what is elemental about being human.

Encore: Describe Circulo/Circle in five words or short phrases.

AW: Circus of Creation and Discovery

RED: MAGICAL. ENERGETIC. DISCOVERY. FLOWING. COOL. FUN.

RH: An English/Spanish bilingual hula hooping show.
More fun every time it goes around.
Circles can be anything.

Encore: Any advice for the parents of young theatre-goers?

RED: Enjoy the show with your child. Watch it through their eyes and find the wonderment with them.

RH: Go to as much theatre as possible!

AW: Keep them coming back. Make theatre an integral part of their lives whether they want to be on the stage, behind the stage, or watching the stage. Theatre can change lives in the most spectacular ways so make sure they stay involved.

Many thanks to these artists for taking the time to share with us. Be sure to come see all of their hard work at Circulo/Circle, now playing at Encore’s Main Campus!

“The Other Side of Things” with Encore Cares Director Sam Regardie

Welcome to this week’s edition of #TechTuesday! Today we’re excited to explore how student director Sam Regardie is taking “Theatre by kids, for kids” to the next level with his Encore Cares production of The Fairy Tale Network. Enjoy the interview and mark your calendars!

Encore: Tell us about yourself! How long have you been involved with Encore?

Sam: I’ve been with Encore for more than a year now. I’ve been in the cast of 3 shows and have been on crew once. My most memorable show is probably Night at the Wax Museum because it was my first show with Encore and I got to meet so many great people.

Encore: How did you first learn about Encore Cares? What prompted you to apply to be a student director?

Sam: I learned about Encore Cares from my friend Xander Tilock, who started this program and directed a show last year. I heard about him directing and thought it was something I would enjoy doing. I’ve only seen a play from the perspective of an actor and crew member before and I thought it would be very cool to see a show from the other side of things.

Encore: What skills have you gained from past Encore productions that have helped you in your role as student director?

Sam: Being in 3 other shows helps me know some things to do while directing, such as how to block a show. I also know how it feels to act in a play and I know what I want from a director, so that helps me shape what I do in rehearsals. The one time I worked on lights for crew helped me know how a show works behind the stage. Being on the crew helped me understand the more technical aspects of a show.

Encore: What’s been the most rewarding part of the rehearsal process? What about the most challenging?

Sam: The most rewarding part of the rehearsal process is simply watching the show and seeing what I’ve worked on and created. It feels so great to see an entire show and know that I made that happen. The most challenging part is that I’ve never directed before. Sometimes I don’t really know what to do in a rehearsal because this is my first time directing.

Encore: What is the biggest takeaway you hope the audience gets from seeing the show?

Sam: I hope that the audience will come out of seeing the show loving the theater. I have been doing theater for the majority of my life and have totally loved it. The show is very funny too, and I hope people laugh and enjoy themselves while watching the show. I want others to see how great the theater is and how it can inspire people. I also want to show what an amazing place Encore is and how dreams can come true there.

Encore: Describe The Fairy Tale Network in a few short words or phrases.

Sam: “Who knew fairy tales could be so hilarious?”

Join Sam and his Encore Cares cast in their hilarious hijinks March 3rd, 7th, and 9th!

Remembering Marji Jepperson

We are sad to share the passing of Marji Jepperson, a former Encore director and actor, props master and dear member of our Encore family. She brought tremendous joy to working with the children of our organization for almost 20 years. We’re delighted to share some of the many memories of Marji from our Encore family:

Seussical was the first show I did with Encore and Marji was the director. I was so excited to be in the show but at the same time such a shy little 15 year old. It was my first time performing in such a big theatrical performance and I wasn’t the most outgoing at that time. Susan still tells stories of how shy I was then compared to how much I have grown out of my shell now! But Marji saw something in me, hence choosing me to be in the performance, which was my first step to becoming part of the Encore family which I love so dearly, so for that I am forever grateful! Marji asked me to be the dance captain for Godspell the following year because she remembered my dancing in Seussical, which made me so excited because I thought I was just a quiet little nobody then! She was always so happy to see everyone at rehearsal and supported each show by making her own show sweatshirt. I was lucky enough to get the opportunity to work on the production side with her in a number of shows, most closely in Cinderella where she directed and I choreographed. Marji was such a sweet soul, kind to all and always with a gentle way about her!
-Sarah Conrad

I met Marji many many years ago through Encore (when it was still The Children’s Theatre). She was funny, creative, always cheerful. I worked with her on more shows than I can remember, when we were both designers and when she was the director. Her props were always inventive (and glitzy!) More importantly, she guided both my children through multiple productions, encouraging them, teaching them skills they still use today, mentoring them. She was unfailingly kind. When her health problems became more significant, she did not complain but kept working her magic. I am sure it took a lot out of her but she seemed indefatigable. My daughter describes her as always loving and filled with joy. Her customized bags and shirts for every show- such a fun spirit. She was a trouper. She is tremendously missed.
-Debra Leonard

Our Marji memory is her warmth and her kindness, along with her custom sweatshirts for every show!
-The Meek family

My favorite Marji memory is that whenever we came into rehearsal for Once Upon A Mattress she was happy to be there and thrilled to see us. She obviously loved the rehearsal process and building a show and her passion rubbed off on the cast.
-Rosemarie O’Connor

Marji Jepperson directed shows for many Encore seasons including Darius the Dragon and Rap-Punzel (2012), Honk! Jr. (2013), and Once Upon a Mattress (2014)

I deeply enjoyed getting to know Marji Jepperson over the past 10 years. She had a gift for working with children and knew how to create a warm and welcoming environment where they could express themselves. I will miss her wonderful smile, patient soul and fantastic sweatshirts. Thank you for the lasting impact you had on our organization Marji!
-Sara Strehle Duke

While lighting nearly 30 shows for Encore, I have had the pleasure of working with Marji in many of her capacities: Director, props maven, choreographer, actor, kid wrangler, friend & mother (to name a few). She was smart, funny, occasionally a bit crusty, wise, courageous, talented, kind and my pal. She is and will be missed.
-Gary Hauptman

Marji has been a Rockstar for Encore. I have been with Encore for years as a independent contractor and even though our paths did not cross as often as I would have liked, I had always heard of her great work and what a great person she was and how easy it is to work this. As I became full time with the organization and had the pleasure of speaking with her. At the first moment of meeting her I was able to understand why she was so beloved.
-Madaline Langston

I remember how much each cast meant to Marji. I think each subsequent cast became her favorite one. I also remember how much she wanted to protect the props. I’m very thankful and fortunate to have had the opportunity to be a member of one of her casts.
-Richard Kashmanian

It was always such a joy to see Marji at the theatre, from directing shows, to seeing her fabulous props and set dressing, and just her presence on opening weekends in her amazing show sweaters. She is the definition of Encore spirit. Thank you for your inspiring creativity, joyful spirit and kindness.
-Aileen Pangan

Marji created the beautiful props and set dressing for many shows including:

On my first day at Encore, I was introduced to Marji and Kristen as the “mother daughter dream team.” I don’t believe I’ll ever think of them any other way. It was inspiring to see a mother and daughter working so well together. It always brought a smile to my face to see Marji at the theatre. She exuded positive energy and her laugh was infectious. She was such a creative soul from crafting so many imaginative props to her personalized show sweaters. I’ll always think of Marji wearing one of her sweaters smiling in the back of a theatre seeing her work onstage.
-Rebecca Pfeil

Marji Jepperson’s round cheeked, sparkle-eyed, angelic face appeared to me to be fairy godmother-like. Unruffled, unflappable, a benign countenance that seem to say, “I have seen everything and done everything in theater, and whatever new crisis is or will be upon us, I will handle.”
I can see her churning butter during Oklahoma’s, “Oh, What a Beautiful Morning”; herding recalcitrant teens in West Side Story; hauling enough Cat in the Hat dolls (from the Dollar Store!) to hang across the whole proscenium for the first Seussical. She loaned books, toys, and a portrait of Queen Victoria for the display window. Her creative hand will be missed everywhere.
-Sherry Gainer

I sat and thought for a long time, staring at a blank page, thinking of the best way that I could convey my relationship with Marji over the years. Running through a list of shows we did together (I lost count…at least 20) over the 20 years we knew each other seemed too rote. Instead, I thought I’d share a scattering of images from over the years…a view of Marji from all sides in the hopes that you can piece together what I can’t put in words. First, a dance from West Side Story. Marji was choreographer. It was the Jets Song that starts the show. We’re all trying to do this step where we’re linked up like a kick-line, and we all take a step right (in front of the next person) and then a step left. We’re a bunch of gangly teenagers, and needless to say, it does not go well the first time. Or second time. Or 50th time. I remember Marji as the soul of patience getting us through rehearsal after rehearsal until it was right. Quite a few years later we were doing Oklahoma, again with Marji choreographing. She managed to make me as credible a ballet-ish dancer as I was ever going to be…and then Aunt Eller dropped out a couple of weeks before opening and Marji stepped into the breach without hesitation (and was much better). She also was skeptical of the number of cymbal crashes I’d put in the orchestration in that show. She was right to be…I’d used them to cover any time I’d made a mistake…plus cymbal crashes always make things sound more exciting! Going back again, Marji played my mother, Mrs. Higgins, in My Fair Lady. I was still a young and naïve actor, and watching Marji was a masterclass in professionalism. I remember all the ridiculous props I asked for over the years that were realized better than I could have imagined and with only a little good-natured grumbling. I remember Marji pulling emotions out of me that I didn’t think I had in Godspell. I’ll always remember Marji and the kind words she had for everyone. I’m so sad that she’s gone, but she will live on in my heart and in the hearts of everyone she worked with.
-Matthew Heap

Marji is the mother of Encore’s Technical Director Kristen Jepperson.

We will be celebrating her life and legacy tonight on Monday, January 29 from 6:30 – 8:30 pm at Encore’s Offices (St. Andrews Episcopal Church 4000 Lorcom Lane Arlington, VA 22207). The program will begin at 7:00 pm. All are welcome.

3 Reasons to Catch the Final Weekend of The Lion King Jr.

Welcome back to #FrontRowFriday! Encore welcomed over 1,300 patrons to the savanna of Kenmore Middle School Theatre last weekend to enjoy the “roaring” success of Disney’s The Lion King Jr.

“The Circle of Life” must go on, but you still have four chances to catch this “wild” production before it closes. We’re excited to share three reasons you won’t want to miss the performance that’s had audiences on their feet.

1) “Hakuna Matata.” Forget your worries! This 90 minute show is full of fantastic choreography, beautiful costumes, and soaring voices. You’ll leave your cares at the door and be rushing back for more after intermission.

2) See a production that’s been months in the making. Our cast (all ages 14 and under!), crew, and design team have been working hard in rehearsal and the shop since October to bring this production to life. Their wonderful work will have audiences in a “Stampede” to join Encore’s next production or learn more in our classes.

3) Share your favorite Disney memories with new audiences. If you grew up dancing around your living room to “I Just Can’t Wait To Be King,” this weekend is your chance to share these classic songs with a new generation – children, grandchildren, students, and more. There is certainly a song for everyone to love!

Take a trip to Pride Rock this weekend for the final weekend of Disney’s The Lion King Jr. We certainly hope that you’ll be “Feeling the Love” for our talented cast and crew. Click here to read what Arlington Sun Gazette had to say!
