Making Music with Clementine‘s Composer Paul Reisler

Hello, and a lovely #TechTuesday to all of you Encore fans! We hope that everyone had a safe and fun long weekend. Our cast and crew certainly appreciated the extra rest, as they begin tech week for The Talented Clementine tonight. The production team will be putting the final touches on this project that has been over two years in the making. Today, we sit down with Paul Reisler, the man who got the ball rolling all those months ago. Paul is the composer, lyricist, and book writer for our upcoming production of The Talented Clementine.
Encore: In your own words, could you describe the story of The Talented Clementine?
Paul: The story follows the misadventures of Clementine, an eccentric and lovable yet unintentionally devious eight-year-old, through third grade as she struggles to discover her talent in time for the school talent show. Clementine doesn’t think she has any talent. As the night of Talent Palooza draws closer, Clementine grows desperate for an act, any act, she can perform. But the unexpected talent she demonstrates at the show saves the show and surprises everyone–most of all herself. The story reminds us that everyone has a talent, everyone has a gift, and our gift back is to encourage them and help them find it.
Encore: What got you excited to adapt Sara Pennypacker’s book into a musical?
Paul: Sara is a good friend of mine who I met at an artist colony years ago. After meeting here, I read a couple of the Clementine books and was totally charmed and captivated by the character.
Encore: Can you describe the songwriting process for the show and what makes it so special to collaborate with children?
Paul: We wrote most of the songs after I had written the script. We’d read and discuss what was happening in the show at the places we wanted songs. Working with the children, script became song. It is a collaborative process. Together we come up with both the lyrics and the music. Over the last 20 years, I’ve written about 2,800 songs with 65,000 children and all that experience really helps when you want to write something specific.
Encore: What was your first interaction with music?
Paul: Like Clementine, I didn’t think I had any musical talent. Though I loved music, I was discouraged from pursuing it as a child. Then, in the mid 1960’s, I started working at the Alexandria Folklore Center. It changed my life as I met many wonderful musicians like Bill Monroe, Linda Ronstadt, Joan Baez, and many others.
Encore: What would you say to yourself as a young musician/artist?
Paul: While natural talent is helpful, it only takes you so far. Desire can take you through a lifetime. I don’t think I started with any natural musical talent, but the desire burned hot and has kept me growing and learning over the decades.
Encore: Why do you think music and the performing arts is important for children?
Paul: I don’t want to talk about all the studies that show how music helps kids perform better in school. It does, but for me that’s not the point. The arts teach us how to create, how to make something out of nothing, how to connect disparate elements to make something new. Kid Pan Alley is there to inspire kids to be creators of their own culture and to rekindle creativity as a core value in education.

5 Reasons Not to Miss The Talented Clementine

#1 – It’s a World Premiere!
Be one of the first to see this musical’s debut! Adapted from the book The Talented Clementine, by Sara Pennypacker, this script takes the tale of a young girl and her talented friends and brings it to life through song and dance. You’ll get to be a part of Encore history!
#2 – Enjoy a Story about Childhood Joy
“All ages can relate to this playful story about self-discovery and confidence.” -Sara Duke, Executive Director of Encore Stage & Studio
Clementine gets nervous when her third grade teacher announces that her class will be putting on a talent show to raise money for the spring trip. She can’t sing or dance or play an instrument like her super talented friend Margaret, and what talents she does have would not work on a stage. Clementine must find an act, any act, to perform before the big show. But with only a few days to do so, can she put it together in time?
#3 – Take “Theatre by Kids, for Kids” to Another Level
We have partnered with Kid Pan Alley to present this special musical. Kid Pan Alley collaborated with local schools, including Arlington’s Carlin Springs Elementary, through its residency program to create lyrics and music for the production. Come nod your head and tap your toes to songs written by kids, for kids!
#4 – The Great 2019/2020 Season Reveal
At our performance on Sunday, June 2nd, we will announce our 2019/2020 season! Along with the reveal, we will present the 2019 STAR Award winners, 2019 Celeste Award winner, and more!
#5 – Chance to Meet Author Sara Pennypacker
Meet the author of the popular series on opening night! Books will be available for purchase in the lobby–you can get your book signed!

A “Priceless” Experience with Stage Manager Lindsey G.

A glorious #FrontRowFriday to all of you, Encore fans. Ever wonder what it’s like to be one of Encore’s high school stage managers? Today we’re sitting down with Lindsey G. to learn more about her SM experience, including what it’s like to run rehearsals for a world-premiere musical that’s never been performed before.
My first exposure to theatre was with Encore- my sister Lauren did shows before I was old enough to and I grew up going to see her perform. I knew that I wanted to start working with Encore as soon as possible! My very first show was a Stage Door production of Willy Wonka Jr. (I played a squirrel) and I’ve been hooked ever since, doing shows both on stage and behind the scenes. My freshman year of high school, I started stage managing for Encore as well. I love being able to work with both the cast and the crew on a single show, so stage managing is a wonderful fit. Funnily enough though, stage managing had never actually crossed my mind until Susan called me into the conference room one day when I was working as a camp aide and asked if I would be interested. Naturally, I said yes and filled out the application that night.

The most challenging moment I’ve had in over my three years of stage managing was during Lion King, Jr. when the track following “Can You Feel The Love Tonight” began playing over the song during a show. My sound operator hit the “panic” button, which stopped both of the tracks that were playing. Since the program that we were using could not pick up songs in the middle, we tried looking for the iTunes copy of the music but couldn’t find it. I told my ASMs to instruct the actors to keep singing, and they did! The whole cast sang the a-cappella version so well you would think that we did it on purpose. After the show, Rebecca and I went into the sound program and were able to fix the problem. Before the next show we tested it too, just to make sure, and it worked perfectly.
My favorite memory of stage managing was also from Lion King, Jr.; when rehearsals ended ten to fifteen minutes early, Susan would turn the actors over to me and we would play a game. The games in themselves were always enjoyable (we were gifted with a particularly humorous cast), but my favorite story came from what happened before we played one of our games. Before every game I would take suggestions as to what we should play, but would remind the actors that our little circle was not a democracy. It was a monarchy and I was the Queen, because I could veto any game idea if I deemed it too long, too loud, or in any other way not a good fit for that particular day. In response, the actors (of their own volition) by about the third or fourth rehearsal, had taken to calling me “Empress Lindsey.” This proved to be a very beneficial title. On top of it being funny when kids would bow and present me with their phones for the phone box, I found that they were more willing to get quiet, help me carry things, and move quickly when I called places when it was under the premise of it being “for their empress.”
Stage managing has taught me several important skills. For example, stage managing has taught me how to be organized, which comes into play in my day-to-day life all the time- my binders at school are immaculate because of my stage manager “bible.” Perhaps more importantly though, stage managing has taught me how to maintain a balance in everything that I do. Over the past three years, I have learned how to keep things fun and lighthearted while also staying on task and focused, and I have learned when to let the little things go. Also: when to remind someone that if it’s not your prop, don’t touch it!
Stage managing for a world-premiere musical has been both more hectic and more rewarding than both of my previous stage management experiences. The opportunity to do an original show gives the actors and directors near limitless freedom for their creativity, which is an amazing thing to watch unfold. Sometimes that overflowing creativity means that we create four different versions of the same song with minor speed or pitch changes just to see which one fits best, or change the key of a song to better fit the voice of the actor. Normally, such activities lead to me running back and forth with the sound computer or standing over the copier while music packets print, which is what makes the show more hectic. In fact, I don’t think that I’ve sat down during the past three rehearsals! But in the end, the freedom to mold the show any way the directors or actors want in order to make [The Talented] Clementine the best show it can be is priceless. Being able to do that really makes Clementine a special show, and I feel so lucky to be a part of it.
Thank you for sharing your Encore story with all of us here on The Front Row, Lindsey! Now that you’ve met the face that’s calling the cues behind the scenes, be sure to scoop up your tickets for The Talented Clementine, opening at the end of this month. “Inspiring Acting” – An Audience Member’s Review

Greetings, Encore fans, and happy #TheatreMagicMonday! We were fortunate enough to have a guest reviewer join us at the opening weekend of Robin Hood. Read on to learn how our production of this classic tale stacked up, through the eyes of a target audience member.
I’ve always been a fan of the story of Robin Hood. I think I liked the idea of the swashbuckling hero robbing from the rich and giving to the poor. So, when I was offered the opportunity to review Encore Stage & Studio’s production of Robin Hood, I jumped at the chance. If you are not familiar with Encore Stage & Studio, it is a theatre company; a children’s theatre, specifically, which offers performances of musicals and plays, for kids played by kids. And, this Encore production did not disappoint! From the inspiring acting to the resplendent scenery and elegant costumes, this production transported me, and I am sure the audience as well, back to the medieval period, replete with chivalry, sword fights, jousting, archery, maypoles, and royalty. There was even a beautiful and talented dancing wood sprite!
The story is one that most know; Robin Hood, the heroic outlaw, expert archer and swordsman, clashes with malevolent Prince John and his henchmen, led by the duplicitous Sheriff of Nottingham, in order to free the good people of Nottingham from their tyranny and save Nottingham for the one true king, King Richard’s, return. When King Richard went off to battle in the Crusades, he left his ward, Maid Marion in the care of the scheming Lady Merle, who plots with the Sheriff of Nottingham to help Prince John usurp King Richard’s throne. Robin Hood, with the help of his band of Merry Men (Little John, Friar Tuck, Will Scarlet, and the rest), must rescue Maid Marian and rid Nottingham of its cruel rulers.
Though this version of Robin Hood was more on the dramatic side, offering impressive acting from all in the cast, there were also many moments of humor and levity which the audience thoroughly enjoyed. The cast ranged in ages from nine to seventeen and I found myself continually amazed at the level of professionalism and talent from these young performers. And, while I enjoyed all of the performances, I found two particularly noteworthy: Hannah Torma, for her impervious and haughty Lady Merle, and Maggie Donnelly, for her hilariously obnoxious Sheriff’s Wife. When the two were sharing a scene together, the juxtaposition of the two characters made for some really great moments of dry comedy!
Throughout, the young cast kept the audience – adults and children alike – captivated and thoroughly engaged. The children really seemed to enjoy seeing actors onstage who they can relate to! If you and your family love period dramas and are looking for affordable family theatre entertainment, purchase your tickets now to see Encore Stage & Studio’s Robin Hood!

Encore Joins the Merry Band

Happy opening night to Encore’s production of Robin Hood! This afternoon we’re checking in with some of our staff before they dash off to the theatre, wanting to know what has them most pumped for this production!
Rebecca, Production Manager: I’m excited for Robin Hood because there is real archery onstage! It’s a great opportunity for the cast to learn new skills. Plus, it’s very exciting to see as an audience member! How often do you get to see real archery onstage?
Aileen, Director of Marketing: I’m so excited for Robin Hood because it was my very first show when I joined Encore Stage & Studio back in 2011! It was fun to see how Frank Pasqualino directed and brought the story to life, on a totally different stage (Rosslyn Spectrum Theatre), and I’m intrigued to see how our artistic director, Susan Keady, shares her vision and direction to the same story on another stage! I’m looking forward to all the action with the stage combat, how the actors take on their roles, and how Debra Leonard’s beautiful costumes are transformed with this new direction on the classic tale.
Shannon, Registrar: I’ve heard that there are several styles of dancing in this show. It’s pretty unique to have that in a production that’s not a musical, so I’m looking forward to seeing how it all works in with the plot.
Caolan, Production Apprentice: I’ve watched this production evolve from words on a page into a frenetic feast for the eye – and the stomach, in Friar Tuck’s case. Everyone has worked incredibly hard, and the work has paid off in every beat of the show. I can’t wait to share this experience with the audience!

Alana, Arts Apprentice: Hmm, let’s see. Archery, a maypole, and an out law hero saving the day?! What’s there not to be excited about!!!

An Enchanted Line-Up, Coming Your Way This Friday

A quaint bookshop. A lovely owner. Some unruly jewelry smugglers. A group of famous literary faces – will they be able to band together to save the day? Read on to meet a few of our heroes and consider their odds of success.
Dorothy Gale
This plucky heroine is fearless in the face of adversity, keeping her new friends by her side to face down the odds. Come see how A Likely Story bookshop stacks up against the fields of Kansas or the magic of Oz.
Sherlock Holmes
The brilliance of this renowned detective is well-known – did you catch his escapades last season? Will his wit be the key to rescuing the bookshop from disaster?
Robin Hood
A popular figure this season, this beloved rouge loves a bit of well-deserved justice. Will the curtain’s fall bring about a merry end?
Heidi
The mischief of jewelry smugglers is certainly a change from this classic character’s quiet life in the Swiss Alps; how will she handle such drama?
Tom Sawyer
This notorious trickster has been on the wrong side of the law himself, but now his bookshop home is under threat. What is there to be done?
The Queen of Hearts
This strong-willed monarch has been turning heads for years here at Encore, in productions of Alice in Wonderland and A Fairytale Christmas Carol. Will she let an assault against the bookshop stand?
Long John Silver
Hardened by years as a pirate at sea, could Silver be one of the bookshop’s best defenders?
So what do you think? Does a group of wily jewelry thieves stand a chance against our band of literary heroes? Guess you’ll have to join us at the theatre this Friday, when The Enchanted Bookshop opens to find out!

Yo ho, yo ho, an Encore life for me!

A happy holiday #FrontRowFriday from Encore to all of you! We hope everyone is enjoying themselves over the holiday weekend, surrounded by loved ones and seasonal cheer. To help you stay in the mood, check out our interview with a few of the cast members from the good ship Jingle ARRGH the Way!
Encore: Introduce yourself! Who do you play in Jingle? How long have you been involved in theatre? In what other Encore shows or programs have you participated?
Bridget: Hi, I am Bridget! I play Swill the Pirate. I have been involved in theatre for about six years now. This is my first Encore show, but I have been in Encore’s Scenes for Tweens As You Like It as Phebe.
Kate: Hello! I’m Kate, and I play the role of Sharktooth. He is the fiercest pirate of the seven seas, and also has a secret Broadway aspiration. I have been involved in theatre for around a year now. My first musical was [Disney’s] The Lion King, Jr. with Encore in February, 2018. I have been in three shows since: Pinocchio as sassy Contessa Natasha the cat, a school production of Treasure Island, and Shrek, Jr. with Stage Door [Summer Camp] as Papa Ogre and then Fiona in later performance.
Vivien: Hi, my name is Vivien; I am an 8th grader from Arlington, but on the stage I am Pierre, French pirate chef! I have loved theater spectating and acting for as long as I can remember! My first role with Encore was Little Wolf in A Fairy Tale Christmas Carol and then last year as one of the 12 girls in Madeline’s Christmas. I’ve also participated in the Encore’s Stage Door camps the last several summers. I had a lot of fun playing Harry Macafee in Bye Bye Birdie this summer!
Encore: What’s your favorite memory from the Jingle audition process?
Vivien: My favorite part of the Jingle audition process was definitely getting to see all of my Encore friends at the auditions.
Bridget: My favorite memory is when I was in callbacks with Lily (Jeremy Jacob), when she was Black Beard and I was a pirate wanting to be on her crew.
Kate: My favorite memory from the Jingle audition process was realizing how silly this show was truly going to be! I went in expecting some hardcore singing because of the musical aspect of the show, but when I entered the audition room we started singing showtunes with pirate twists. I thought to myself, “This is gonna be a fun show regardless if I participate.”
Encore: Tell us a pirate joke?
Bridget: What is a pirate’s favorite letter? You would think it’s “R,” right? Wrong, it’s “C;” get it?
Vivien: Why did the pirates go to jail? They got arrrrrrested.
Kate: Where does a one legged pirate go to breakfast: IHOP!
Encore: What is your favorite part of the holiday season?
Kate: My favorite part of the holiday season is the time spent with family. I have a great family, and when we all come together to spend time without the distractions of ordinary life, it’s a hoot.
Vivien: The food! 🙂
Bridget: My favorite part of the holiday season is seeing all my family that I rarely ever see.
Encore: Is your character on the “Naughty” or “Nice” list? Why?
Vivien: My character is on the naughty list because Santa tried to hire him as his chef but he turned him down to work for Braid Beard (he never liked the cold).
Bridget: My character would probably fit on both: He would fit on the nice list because he helps all of his pirate friends better understand things. He would fit on the naughty list because he can’t really drive that well (he tends to run away with the wheel in his hands.)
Kate: Sharktooth is a really tough guy on the outside, but take off the eye patch and he truly is a “sensitive guy.” He is on the nice list; Santa has been a bit forgiving this year. Sometimes, when Sharktooth gets a bit carried away in show business, his kindnesses get put on hold.
Encore: Why should everyone come see the show?
Bridget: Everyone should come see the show because it’s all about the holidays. You learn the true meaning of Christmas, and, I mean, who doesn’t love pirates?
Kate: Everyone should definitely come see the show! There is something for everyone. The show is jam packed full of funny references. We even have a few special guests from the North Pole if you wanna put your Christmas list in early this year (maybe get in a good word with the big guy!).
Vivien: Come see the show because you will never see anything else that’s quite as festive.
Thanks so much for sharing your holiday memories, ladies! You’ve certainly gotten us in the mood for fun songs, charming hijinks, and, of course, pirates! Come join us in the audience of Jingle ARRGH the Way by purchasing your tickets online or by calling our Box Office at (703) 548-1154. Please note that we won’t be back to port until Monday, November 26th, after the holiday.

“Whimsical Adventure” w/ Sidewalk Stroll Actor Jessi Shull

With the official arrival of fall, we here at Encore have been relishing in the crisp weather and getting outside whenever we can. Apple picking, fireside chats, and even just a quick stroll around our building! The heroes of our latest production for the very young, A Sidewalk Stroll, similarly make an adventure out of their weekly walk to the park.

Encore fans may remember when we premiered this show back in 2017; it was such a hit that we’re excited to bring it back, this time with several new cast members! You’ve met A.K. Nell here on the blog in the past, so today we’re thrilled to introduce a new face, Ms. Jessi Shull!
Encore: Please briefly introduce yourself. How have you been involved with Encore?
Jessi: My name is Jessi Shull, I first got involved with Encore this past summer through performing in Seussical. It was such a fun experience that I was excited to have another opportunity to work with this wonderful organization.
Encore: What’s been the most interesting part of the rehearsal process for A Sidewalk Stroll?
Jessi: I think the most interesting part is getting to step outside my normal thought processes and instincts as an actor to think “what would a child do?” It’s a refreshing way to think about the work AND the world that you don’t ordinarily get to in more traditional shows geared toward adult audiences.
Encore: Has there been any aspect that been particularly challenging for you?
Jessi: The most challenging aspect of a show like this is preparing for those “wild card” responses you might get in anything involving young children. There are a lot of possibilities and you have to rehearse expecting the unexpected.
Encore: If you had to describe A Sidewalk Stroll to a child, how would you do it?
Jessi: Three children set off on a whimsical adventure of discovery and feeling on their way to the park.
Encore: Which emotion describes your mood toward the show?
Jessi: Excited!! 😀
