5 Fantastic June Highlights

In case you haven’t heard, June is “bustin’ out all over.” As we head into the weekend, we’re happy to look back at what this first month of summer has held for Encore. We’re even more excited to share with our readers all the fun and adventure that await us in the coming months.

Time to Go Home!
Although it made last month’s highlights as well, we’re still over the moon about our Homecoming Season Reveal that took place on June 2nd. For the 2019/2020, Encore Stage & Studio will be returning to our home of Thomas Jefferson Community Theatre. Single tickets won’t be on sale until later this summer, but you can guarantee your best seats (and score some awesome Encore swag) by becoming a Season Member today. Purchasing a Membership is a huge and significant way to demonstrate your love for Encore and your trust that we will produce a season of quality productions.

Make New Friends and Keep the Old
With summer getting off to a running start this month, Encore saw many faces, new and returning alike. Camp training on June 5th brought together our wonderful team of camp directors, teaching artists, and camp aides as we prepared for an amazing #EncoreSummer. We also have six talented and creative interns joining us in various departments: Education, Marketing, and Production. Did you miss our interview with this year’s Arts Management intern, Brian? Click here to check it out!

On the Road Again
June brought Encore staff and students an exciting new opportunity – taking a production on tour! After two weekends of amazing shows, our world premiere of The Talented Clementine, based on the young readers’ series by Sara Pennypacker, got to travel to Little Washington, Virginia. The cast performed in the Theatre at Little Washington on June 15th, adding yet another first to this cast’s series of accomplishments and sharing the magic of “Theatre by kids for kids” with a whole new community.

9 Performances of Disney’s Newsies

Set in turn-of-the century New York City, Newsies is the rousing tale of Jack Kelly, a charismatic newsboy and leader of a band of teenaged “newsies.” When titans of publishing raise distribution prices at the newsboys’ expense, Jack rallies newsies from across the city to strike against the unfair conditions and fight for what’s right!

Teachers Gonna Teach
This May, Encore celebrated Teacher Appreciation Week with a special ticket offer to honor the educators that brighten all of our lives. Looking for the perfect end of the school year gift for the teachers in your life? Consider giving them the gift of “Theatre by kids, for kids” with an Encore gift certificate!

Celebrating Rosemarie with a Disney Villains theme day!

So Long, Farewell
This month we bid a fond farewell to Encore’s first-ever Development Associate, Rosemarie O’Connor. Starting with Encore as a show participant, learning through a summer internship, and going on to grow Encore’s grant funding and donor relations, Rosemarie has certainly been a vital part of our organization. With her sunshiny smile, love of puns, and flawless sense of style, she will definitely be missed.

We Are the Champions
For the second year in a row, Encore Stage & Studio is honored to be recognized by the Arlington Partnership for Children, Youth and Families. Artistic Director Susan Keady was named a Connect with Kids Champion in 2018. This year, Encore as an organization was named a Do for Kids Champion, with Aileen Christian, A.K. Nell, and Sara Duke all receiving notable mentions in the nomination process. We’re so grateful for everyone who supports Encore and allows us to further connect within our community.

Another Opening, Another Show
The last day of May brought a much anticipated moment: the world-premiere opening night of The Talented Clementine! Opening night buzzed with excitement during our pre-show celebration, while author Sara Pennypacker met patrons and graciously signed copies of her books. The cast certainly let their talents shine as they dazzled our enthusiastic crowd. Haven’t seen the show yet? You have one weekend of local performances left, followed by a special touring event, so don’t wait!

Psst…
Although the event technically happened on June 2nd, we just can’t contain our excitement: Encore’s 2019/2020 Homecoming Season has been revealed! Check it out right here on The Front Row, then show some hustle and sign up for an Encore Membership. You’ll be able to choose your seats before anyone else, plus you’ll receive an exclusive Encore tote!

A Pre-K Q&A w/ Madaline Langston

Greetings, Encore fans! With auditions for Newsies underway (one last chance tonight!), thoughts of summer are saturating the atmosphere here at Encore Stage & Studio. This year, we’re excited to launch a new summer camp program, exclusively for ages 3-5. We’ve been having such a blast in our Early Childhood classes that we didn’t want the fun to end over the summer. As with anything new, you may have some questions about this new camp program. Fear not! We’ve got Camp Director Madaline Langston here on The Front Row to answer some of the most frequently asked questions we’ve heard so far:

Q: Will my preschooler be at camp all day?
A: As this will be the first camp experience for most of our students, we want the week to be calm as possible. The camp day will run from 9 AM – 12 PM.

Q: Will you accept students younger than age three?
A: We are unable to accept students younger than age three. Children under the age of three are welcome in our Early Childhood classes on Tuesday mornings from 10:30 am-11:15 am, up until our final class for the year on June 11th.

Q: Do you provide snack for campers?
A: We do not provide snack for our summer programs. Snack and lunch should be packed by the student’s family, and should be peanut-free. Please remember to pack a water bottle!

Q: Does my child need to be toilet trained?
A: All participants must be toilet trained. A toilet trained child wears underwear during the day, uses the bathroom independently, and indicates the need to use the bathroom.

Q: What is the class size for this new preschool program?
A: Ten students.

Q: Are your employees CPR/First Aid certified?
A: Our camp directors are all CPR/AED/First Aid Certified. Many of our teaching artists are as well.

Q: My child is five. Should I enroll them in this camp or an It’s Elementary program?
A: Parents know their children best: If your child is new to camp or a large group interaction, perhaps our three hour camp experience is where you may want to begin. If considering It’s Elementary, and you know that your child may need a nap in the middle of the day, a half-day option of It’s Elementary could be a better choice for your child.

Q: How should my child dress for camp?
A: Campers should dress to move. If wearing a skirt or dress, please wear shorts. We ask that all campers wear closed-toe shoes. Rooms can vary on temperatures, so it is suggested that campers bring a sweater or jacket to class.

Thank you for sharing about our brand-new program, Madaline! Got questions we didn’t cover? Please give us a call at 703-548-1154, Monday-Friday, 10 AM – 6 PM.

#TechTuesday with Scenes for Tween’s Seth Rosenke

Whether you long to write your own plays, swash buckle into battle, or belt it out like a Broadway star, this summer’s Scenes for Tweens line-up has a theatre adventure for you. Today we’re chatting with S4T Camp Director, Mr. Seth Rosenke:

Encore: Please briefly introduce yourself: What’s your background in theatre? How long have you worked at Encore and in which capacities?

Seth: I’ve been acting actively for 18 years. I hold an MFA in Acting from The Catholic University of America. I have been with Encore since the summer of 2013, where I started as an Education Intern. I have grown in my capacity with the company into a Teaching Artist and Camp Director for Scenes for Tweens.

Encore: What is the most interesting aspect of Scenes for Tweens summer camps?

Seth: I strive to imbue a sense of independent artistic voice in the students, allowing them to bring their own ideas to the stage and teaching them how to activate those ideas to aid in telling the story. I also strive to give students the skills to communicate those ideas in a collaborative fashion with their castmates and instructors. Essentially, the most interesting aspect of Scenes for Tweens is the ability to incept and collaborate.

Encore: What is your favorite #EncoreSummer memory?

Seth: I’ll reference question two. During the first ever Tragedy vs. Comedy camp, the students adapted two versions of Peter Pan for the stage, including a tragic version. When Tinkerbell died in the tragic version, the audience knew to clap to “bring her back”…but as part of the story, our Tink didn’t come back. Watching the actor playing Tink try to keep it together as the audience clapped, then started laughing alongside her was deeply rewarding!

Encore: In your opinion, why are the performing arts important for young people?

Seth: Theatre is where I learned some of the most important lifelong lessons I’ve ever learned, like humility, collaboration, and independent thinking. I have witnessed and experienced the impact the performing arts can have on one’s own voice, and it is my solemn goal to help each student of mine find theirs.

Encore: What are you most excited about for Scenes for Tweens 2019?

Seth: It’s always the same answer, every summer: the new ideas the young performers will expose me to. Also: Shakespeare camp!

Thank you again to Mr. Seth for sharing his experiences with us. Join us at Scenes for Tweens this summer to find your voice, explore diverse topics, and, most importantly, have a blast!

3 Spots & 3 Reasons: Tech Camp w/ Rebecca Pfeil

Welcome to another #TechTuesday here on The Front Row, Encore fans. Today, we’re excited to touch base with Encore’s Production Manager, Rebecca Pfeil. You may have caught her interview with student editor Isabel a few weeks ago (if not, click here to check it out!). This time, however, she’s talking to us about Tech Camp.Take it away, Rebecca!

I was the first Technical Director of Tech Camp for Willy Wonka Jr, which is coming back this summer! I was also the Technical Director for the first Peter Pan Jr, Beauty and the Beast Jr, Anything Goes, Annie Jr. and more. Every summer, I always stop in and help with an aspect of Tech Camp, such as pulling costumes from storage, teaching a lesson, or assisting with the lighting design. I always look forward to meeting the new tech campers and saying hi to the returners. I hope to see you at Tech Camp this summer! Here are some reasons why you should register today:

1) Imagination
If you love painting or the idea of using your creative thinking to imagine what you can make out of cardboard, Tech Camp is the place for you. You get to design all the sets and props for the shows, all while making a show come to life in just three short weeks! It’s always great to see the innovative and unique elements that Tech Camp crew members bring to each production.

2) Learning
Tech Camp is an awesome opportunity to learn more about backstage and booth crew positions in a low-stress environment. If you’ve never tried crew before, this is your chance to get your feet wet before auditioning for crew on an Encore season production. You get the chance to explore lighting design with the light board and other special opportunities that you won’t find at other summer programs.

3) Fun!
Camp is a wonderful place to make new friends. It’s all the fun and bonding of a full-scale show, condensed into three weeks of awesomeness. Many students have made connections that grow into friendships that last far beyond summer, which is always lovely to see.

Thanks for sharing with us, Rebecca! If Tech Camp sounds like the place for you, don’t delay – there are only three remaining spaces in each session of Tech Camp for Summer 2019!

Tech Camp

With just three weeks to bring together all of the technical elements of a show, you’ll be challenged to bring your best, most creative self to camp every day. Each morning, you’ll focus on exploring technical skills including scenic design, costuming, stage management, and more. Afternoons will be spent turning designs into reality by creating set pieces, props, and costumes. By the third week of camp, you’ll be ready to present your designs to the public and run a seamless show backstage. Throughout each session, your work will be supplemented by guest artist-led workshops on topics such as stage combat, sound design, and lighting as you prepare to put your work on display in the final performances.

7 Terrific Reasons to Come to Tech Camp This Summer

Happy #TechTuesday, Encore fam! We’re still working through our post-show blues after closing The Enchanted Bookshop this weekend. Lifting our spirits? Looking toward summer! With just over two weeks of Early Bird pricing left, we’re dreaming of putting our skills to the test at Tech Camp. Unsure if it’s the place for you? Read on for seven awesome reasons to don your black clothes and become a Crew-ton this summer.

1) Learn from the Best
Our teaching artists are experienced technicians that have been working in the field of tech theatre for years. They’re a great resource for learning new skills, refining your techniques, or asking questions about a working life in the theatre.

2) Give Run Crew a Test Run
Do you usually find yourself onstage, rather than behind the scenes? Tech Camp is a wonderful way to dip your toe in the technical theatre pond, so to speak. Come give it a try – maybe you’ll have such a blast that you’ll audition for crew next season!

3) Part of the Crew, Part of the Ship
In just three short weeks, you’ll work together to create all the technical elements of a production. This hard work and tight time frame are the perfect place to bring people together to create lasting friendships. One of the greatest things of wrapping a production is celebrating with your fellow crew mates!

4) (Near) Instant Gratification
The shortened timeline of Tech Camp also allows you to see your hard work come to fruition sooner rather than later. Who doesn’t love the gratification seeing their successes quickly?

5) Max It Out
Does your schedule during the school year prevent you from being able to audition for an Encore crew during our season? Tech Camp is a fantastic opportunity to experience the whole process of being on crew, in just three weeks of the time!

6) Jack and Jill of Many Trades
Never done tech before? Not sure if your interest lies in scenic painting, prop production, or lighting design? Lucky for you, Tech Camp participants get to experience multiple aspects of the technical theatre experience, allowing you to discover new interests or delve deeper into an existing passion.

7) One Summer, Multiple Shows
The accelerated pace of our Stage Door and Tech Camp programs allow students to participate in several productions, if they so choose. Where will you travel in your technical imagination this summer? Mr. Wonka’s workshop? The chimney-ed rooftops of London? The choice is yours!

If you’re ready to jump in and roll up your sleeves as a techie this summer, sign up today! Early Bird pricing ends on Friday, February 1st, 2019 and you won’t want to miss out on your choice of shows. We look forward to building, painting, lighting, and so much more with every one of you!
