It’s Elementary: Under the Sea (Dance) for ages 5-9
Set sail on a creative journey! We’ll use our bodies, voices, and imaginations to bring beloved undersea stories to life. We will also create original scenes involving our favorite sea creatures. Life is the bubbles! You never know who we might see…“Just keep swimming!” Students will learn a fun dance in the Dance portion of the sampler. Students can experience storytelling in the Classroom Drama portion later in the Open House.

Life is the bubbles! You never know who we might see…”Just keep swimming!” Students can experience creative movement in the Dance sample class earlier in the Open House.

Tragedy vs. Comedy for ages 8-12
Explore acting opposites of tragedy and comedy and decide for yourself which will reign supreme! Actors will delve into the extremes of both comedic and dramatic acting styles as well as the skills needed for both. Culminating in a performance of scripted scenes, students can embrace both their inner clown and tragedian.

Shakespeare for ages 8-12
Get a taste of Shakespeare’s famous comedies as you try out techniques from this two-week camp. Bolster your understanding of the Bard’s language and performance techniques as you embody his famous clowns, enact hilarious misunderstandings, and attempt to decipher twins in disguise!

Stage Door for ages 11-15
In this immersive camp experience, you’ll get a glimpse of what it’s like to work as a theatre professional. Mornings are spent sharpening your acting, singing, and dancing skills. In the afternoons, you’ll put these skills into action, collaborating with other artists in the daily rehearsal process. Each camp production is led by a director, music director, and choreographer, with the curriculum enhanced by workshops with guest artists. Past workshop topics have included stage combat, clowning, makeup design, and physical comedy. As the camp builds towards public performances of a fully-staged musical, you’ll be challenged to fully engage your creativity, to develop a memorable character, and to work as part of a team while gaining valuable stage experience.

Register for the Open House today!

Also, be sure follow our Facebook and Instagram this week for clues on the summer camp themes and Stage Door titles!

Celebrating the Catalogue for Philanthropy

Every four years, Encore applies to the Catalogue for Philanthropy for Greater Washington. This year is our third time being recognized as #OneoftheBest nonprofit organizations in the D.C. area.

Hi, all! Your friendly neighborhood Development Associate, Rosemarie, here. I had the pleasure of filling out our application to the Catalogue for 2018-2019 and have seen first-hand what being a part of the Catalogue means. Here are three reasons why we are honored to be in the Catalogue for Philanthropy.

1) The Blue Seal
Fun fact: I interned the summer of 2015 at Encore (here’s proof), the last time we were selected by the Catalogue. That meant that everything I designed or created had to have this blue seal on it. But what does it mean? Every time you see this logo, it means that an outside organization who specializes in nonprofit organizations, took a fine-toothed comb to a bunch of groups and found Encore excellent. The Catalogue for Philanthropy for Greater Washington’s vision is to build, “a stronger, more resilient community, here, where we live.” The Catalogue believes that Encore is part of the fabric of that community. We are honored to be a part of the Catalogue and Encore shares that vision. From the summer I interned to now, Encore’s leadership in Northern Virginia has only grown. When I see the blue seal, I think about Encore’s scholarship programs, outreach initiatives, and the mentorship I see every day in rehearsal. I am proud to work for such a community focused organization.

2) Connecting Passionate People with our Mission
The Catalogue for Philanthropy is a place where people can find nonprofits doing great work in their own backyard. Knowing that an organization is a part of the Catalogue, gives peace of mind to people who are looking to make an impact with their time or with their dollars. With so many wonderful organizations serving a myriad folks, people can use the Catalogue to find a group that aligns with their passions. Each organization in the Catalogue receives a webpage (here’s ours) and becomes listed in their physical catalogue that gets mailed to over 10,000 people. How cool is that?

Halloween 2018

3) Training for Encore’s Staff
No, we are not training for next year’s Costume Caper with the Catalogue. But, they do offer seminars for all facets of nonprofits. Aileen and Shannon on our Marketing Team can go learn about how other groups utilize social media. Sara and I can learn about trends in grants or fundraising. That means all of our wonderful, fun, and intelligent staff members can do an even better job serving Encore and the kids in our area. And our wonderful apprentices, Caolan and Alana can further their learning and dive deep into any of the subjects offered. My favorite workshop from last year was about how to write thank you letters to donors. It helped me connect the words on my computer to the impact of the donor’s contribution. The workshop helped put into perspective that a great letter can communicate how one donation makes a difference for our organization.

I love seeing how much the D.C. region cares from the organizations to the donors and even the Catalogue! If you want to show that you care, make a gift to Encore today to share the power of children’s theatre with the people in your neighborhood.

#StudioSaturday: Combat Instructor Ian Claar

Today we’ve got another dose of #StudioSaturday for you, friends! Our Late Fall classes are now underway: We’re chatting with Stage Combat teaching artist Ian Claar about the importance of the arts education for youth.

Encore: How long have you been working with Encore? In which capacities?

Ian: I have worked with Encore since 2 years now! My first show was A Fairytale Christmas Carol, for which I was the lighting designer. I have mainly worked on the Production side either designing lights or assisting in designing lights. [Click here to check out our lighting-focused interview with Ian!]

Encore: What’s the most valuable skill that theatre has taught you?

Ian: Theatre teaches so many valuable lessons, but one of my favourite take-aways has been critical thinking and problem solving, and composure under stress. Theatre requires so many things to happen quickly and precisely, with a cast and crew that can adapt just as quickly when things go wrong.

Encore: Why is arts education important for young people?

Ian: Arts education can encompass so many valuable lessons and skills. From communication, to problem solving, to hands on knowledge of building and electricity. The physical awareness of acting and dancing, and the self care that performers learn to take care of their mind and body. The arts provide an insight into our own culture and history and that of those different than us. I can’t think of a reason NOT to expose young people to the arts as much as possible.

Encore: Complete this sentence: “I’m most looking forward to teaching _____ because _____.”

Ian: I’m most looking forward to teaching Stage Combat because it is a valuable acting tool that promotes safety and consent in the artistic world.

Are you itching to put your stage combat skills to the test? Audition for Robin Hood, December 11th & 12th! Not sure how you’ll fit into the Merry band? Shake off your nerves with Encore’s pre-audition workshop on Saturday, December 8th.

Not a fighter? Fear not! Encore’s Winter classes have something for everyone: dance, comedy, adventure, and more! Visit our Class page to check out our offerings and enroll today.

All About Community: Encore’s Healthy Play Initiative

This #FrontRowFriday, we’re getting into the spirit of the season: community, sharing, and giving. We want you to hear from four of our teaching artists that work with the Healthy Play Initiative (HPI), a program created in 2016 to partner with the Arlington Food Assistance Center (AFAC) to provide enriching creative play for the children of families experiencing food insecurity in Arlington. Read on to find out, from those closest to the program, just what makes HPI so special.

Mara Stewart, Teaching Artist: HPI is one of my favorite classes to teach. I feel like I always leave with a smile and a new experience. It has taught me so much about communication. Even when we can’t speak the same language, we are able to create a positive experience and learn from one and another. For most of the kids, this is their first time in a classroom setting. Healthy play focuses on engaging and dynamic activities. We sing, we dance, we color, we play outside, and we learn about healthy food choices. We focus of transitioning from one activity to the next, sharing and expressing ourselves. This program helps us meet kids in the community that we otherwise might not ever get to know. It is an amazing experience to see these children week after week and watch them grow. The first day we meet a child, they often don’t participate or speak and after a few weeks they blossom. They are engaged, singing and are excited to come to HPI and to me that is the best part.

Caolan Eder, Arts Apprentice: To me, HPI is all about community. The children who participate get a chance to play together in a safe setting and make new friends, learning to cooperate in a group as they prepare for the structured environment of school. The program also helps with communication skills. Many of the children live in non-English-speaking homes and struggle to connect with people outside of their families, so finding new ways of interacting really expands their worlds. I remember well how one child’s whole face lit up when she and I discovered that we spoke a common language and could explain ourselves to each other.

The parents and caregivers build community through HPI, as well. In addition to giving them a breather from the responsibilities that come with raising a family, the program allows adults to form a network of people with shared experiences.

Madaline Langston, Education Programs Manager: HPI has made me more patient. Most of the children that I have had the pleasure of serving are learning English and are trying to do their very best. In the classroom, we focus on listening, focus, and engaging students’ motor skills. HPI is a way to provide social interaction with peers. They learn how to make friends. When I first meet most of our HPI participants, I’ve noticed that they usually only interact with their families or friends. I recall one young boy who had just arrived from Peru and did not speak English. I used my cell phone to translate Spanish to him and he smiled and then slowly pronounced Spanish words to me and I spoke to him in English. So cute and funny at the same time. From that point on, he came to the classes with a smile on his face.

Alana Gibson, Arts Apprentice: [Through HPI,] I’ve become more attentive to the children as people and not just children who are unaware of their surroundings and circumstances. HPI is such a meaningful program because, for the most part, this is the only exposure to English speakers that the children get if they don’t go to classes. It’s also meaningful to Encore because it makes us more culturally aware and understanding which helps us standout in the region and theater community. A few weeks ago, at the Arlington Mill location, we had a pair of siblings that came in because they didn’t have school. Mara, the lead teacher, told me that, just a year ago, these siblings spoke almost no English. I was completely shocked because if she hadn’t told me that, I would have never known. So I’m sure that them coming to the program in combination with their language class helped with this amazing feat! In the classroom, I try to focus on being caring, but also keeping some structure. Most of the children are in the house all week with a parent so I want them to have a chance to run around, but I also want to start to help them get the understanding of how a classroom would work at a real preschool. I’m hopeful that HPI plays a real role in preparing these kids for school as they grow older.

It’s through the generous support of our donors that we are able to bring programs like the Healthy Play Initiative to our community here in Arlington. We believe that this type of outreach and engagement is essential for our mission of bringing “Theatre by kids, for kids” to all types of children and families. The empathy, problem solving, and creativity born in the classroom extends far beyond remaining active in the arts – the skills gained through theatre education can last a lifetime. As the holiday season approaches, make an impact in the lives of Arlington children by making a donation today.

Building Leaders Through Theatre

Happy Election Day, Encore fans! Today we welcomed over 50 students to become pirates at our Holiday Mini-Camp/Play in a Day. They worked together to create original stories, perform sketches, and even tell a few sea-riously funny jokes. Our teachers love giving young artists the framework to take chances and grow as collaborates and leaders. Click here to check out more of the awesome skills students gain through Encore’s holiday camp program. But what comes next? Read on this Election Day to learn more about how you can grow as a leader here at Encore:

1) Level up!
Many campers start with us in Mini-Camp, which is catered to those in Kindergarten through 2nd grade. It’s always a pleasure for us as teachers to see students grow over the years and take on more responsibility when they graduate to the Play in a Day program (for grades 3-5). Check out our remaining Holiday camp dates – the next camp is coming up soon!

2) Give back!
We so appreciate our rock star mini-camp volunteers! We welcome students age 13 and up to come out and join our teaching staff for a day. It’s a great way to spend your day off. You’ll be given more responsibilities and the opportunity to test drive elements of teaching a full camp. Interested? Email madaline.langston@encorestage.org with a brief letter including what’s drawn you to the program, as well as any work experience you may have.

3) Dream of summer!
Perhaps you’ve given volunteering a try and realize that you love working with young artists – would you like to get paid to work at camp? You’re in luck! Camp Aide applications are coming soon. Check out these interviews to learn more about #EncoreSummer!

4) Brush up your tech skills!
If you love the backstage aspect of theatre, the role of Stage Manager may be in your future. Though we’ve already selected our student stage managers for the 2018/19 season, it’s the perfect time to work on your application and discuss your tech options with Encore’s production. Click here to learn more about the process and download the Stage Manager application.

5) Have a Care!
Are you ready to try out life on the other side of the audition table? If leading other actors as a Student Director sounds appealing to you, there’s still time to apply for an Encore Cares project. These projects focus on bringing Encore students together to bring theatre to young people who may never have a chance to experience it.

We are so proud of all of the fine leaders that have participated in Encore’s productions, classes, and camps over the years. We consider ourselves lucky to be able to create an environment that fosters empathetic, kind, and well-spoken leaders. Your whole journey starts with a single step: enroll or audition today!

6 Spooky & Splendid Highlights from October

Happy #FrontRowFriday, everyone! This month started with ghosts and ended with costume delights – buckle in for a ride down memory lane as we recap six of Encore’s October highlights:

1) Poltergeists and plotters galore!
The start of October saw the opening of Ghostchasers, the first show of our 2018/19 season. This hilarious romp featured a talented cast, awesome effects, and just enough spookiness to get us excited for the season. Check out these awesome reviews from DC Metro Theatre Arts and The Arlington Sun Gazette. Excited for our next production? Get your tickets for Jingle ARRGH the Way today!

2) We’re…going to the park!
Encore’s latest production has been a walk in the park! We were excited to relaunch A Sidewalk Stroll, one of our favorite pieces in the Theatre for the Very Young series, this time with several new actors. We had the pleasure of taking the show on tour to perform for the Mothers of Northern Arlington group to share the joy of theatre with a whole new audience. The show performs November 3rd, 8th, and 9th, so catch it before it strolls away!

3) We’ve got the magic!
Encore was thrilled to welcome over 75 students at auditions for The Enchanted Bookshop this month. Though such big numbers make choosing our cast and crew super difficult, we’re always excited to see people getting in audition experience! Mark your calendars for our next round of auditions on December 11th and 12th, this time for Robin Hood.

4) We booked a trip to the Hotel Transylvania.
We hosted our first holiday Mini-Camp and Play-in-a-Date on the 26th. With such a spooky theme, our students had a blast creating crafts, learning dances, and, of course, collaborating to create short plays. At the end of camp, they got to perform for other campers, as well as their families and friends! This program packs a lot of awesome activity into the camp period – a perfect way to spend the day when school’s out.

Check out our remaining camp dates and themes:
Veterans Day/NOV 12 – Ferdinand
Thanksgiving/NOV 21 – Coco
MLK Day/JAN 21 – Incredibles
Grade Prep/JAN 28 – Wreck it Ralph
Parent/Teach Conf/MAR 8 – Robin Hood
Grade Prep/APR 1 – Paddington

5) We braved the rain…and didn’t melt!
On October 27th, Encore hosted our third annual Costume Caper 5K & 1K Kids Fun Run! The weather was a bit dreary, but that didn’t stop phantoms, witches, and other Stranger Things from braving the elements to support “Theatre by kids, for kids.” We had a great time celebrating the Halloween spirit with our community. Need a rain check for that registration donation? Check out our Support Us page to learn more about how you can be a positive force for arts education in Arlington.

6) We’re so fetch!
As an office full of theatre people, it probably comes as no surprise that we love any excuse to dress up. October offered us two chances for an office Theme Day:

Mean Girls Day…

…and Halloween. DUH.

If you enjoy our office shenanigans, be sure to follow us over on Instagram to see more of the antics!

October was such an amazing month! Sad as we are to hang up our Halloween costumes, we’re already getting jazzed for our holiday production of Jingle ARRGH the Way, a pirate musical spectacular! We’ve already heard the carols drifting down the hall from rehearsal and it’s certainly getting us in the spirit and ready to set sail. Three Amazing Moments from the Costume Caper 2018

Hey there, everyone! Rosemarie here, reporting from Encore’s Development team. I’m excited to recap this Saturday’s race with all of you. It was a rainy morning. Brave souls assembled to run, run to support Encore! Thanks to all the volunteers and runners who came out to the Costume Caper 5K. Let’s take a look back at some of our favorite moments from this year’s (rainy) Costume Caper 5K and 1K Fun Run!

1) Seeing Encore Participants Outside of Rehearsal or Class
We love rehearsal time but we love seeing our participants hanging out and having a great time outside of productions. Students volunteered, ran, and some even did both! Plus, they had great costumes. We were happy to see one of our newly announced Encore Student Editors, Hannah K., representing in her costume!

2) The Kids Fun Run
From tenacious tots to electric elementary students, we saw a bunch of speedy kids for our 1K Fun Run! They were so fast that by the time we stopped cheering them on at the starting line they were already turning around to come back. As if running in the rain wasn’t hard enough, they ran in amazing costumes. Our Fun Run winner is in her first Encore show, Jingle ARRGH the Way opening in November!

3) “A Little Fall of Rain” Can Hardly Slow These Runners Down
Yes, that was a Les Mis reference. But really, we had over 25 runners who made great time during their 5K run. We had a Phantom who took time off of haunting their opera house, prisoner 24601, and so many more fabulous costumes.

**Bonus Moment** Prizes!
This is one of the most fun moments at any Costume Caper, but this year it was so much more fun! Because everyone had toughed it out in the rain, it was a great moment of community when we got to the awards.

Thanks again to everyone who came out to support Encore’s 3rd annual 5K! If you missed the race and still show your Encore support, we welcome you can make a gift of the amount of the registration ($35). See you next year or, before that, join us at Jingle ARRGH the Way!

Make a Difference and Smile this Holiday Season

They’re coming! The holidays are coming!
No need to fret or get freaked.
We’ve got gift ideas that cannot be beat.
This year, get gifts with shipping that won’t take a while.
And select Encore Stage & Studio when you use Amazon Smile.

From October 29 to November 2, Amazon Smile is donating 5% back to the organizations they serve. That’s 10 times the amount of their usual donation! We’ve put together a list of theatre inspired gifts to help your theatre lover live their best life this holiday season. Happy Shopping! And remember to select Encore Stage & Studio as your non-profit organization!

1) Get Off on the Right Foot
Kids in Encore productions know that a pair of black jazz shoes is a must! They help you move around the stage and complete almost any costume. Just make sure you’ve got your name in them!

2) Theatre is a Sport and You’re on the Varsity Team
Being a part of a show is hard work. Whether you’re learning your cues during tech week when you’re on crew, selling concessions during intermission on front of house, or captivating an audience on stage, you know that it takes a team to make a show happen. This t-shirt can show the world just how much work you put in and make a joke at the same time.

3) You Like Hamilton Too?
So there’s this little-known musical that’s causing quite a fuss these days. Don’t know if you’ve heard of Hamilton? Just kidding! We love it too! We even hosted a Hamilton sing-a-long this past June. There are loads of gifts for the Hamilton fan in your life. There are coloring pages with crayon colors named after the music, necklaces with lyrics from the show, and even an annotated version of the libretto with notes from Lin-Manuel Miranda himself.

4) Shows Become Memories
Whether from a show your theatre lover was in or a performance from your favorite actor, ticket stubs can become keepsakes from a memorable moment. This ticket holder will help you keep all of your beloved stubs in one place and make it look like art!

5) The History of Theatre
Encore has been around for over 50 years, but we still can use a history lesson every now and then. This beautiful book is full of beautiful pictures through the years of glitz and glamour of musical theatre. Maybe you’ll learn about a show that would be perfect for Encore to perform!

Put a smile on your theatre lover’s face and support Encore at the same time. Remember that if you shop with Amazone Smile between October 29 and November 2, you’ll increase your impact by 10x.
