The Story Behind the Story w/ Author Jerry Gidner
In honor of #WaybackWednesday, we’re thrilled to share a special interview with former Board president and 2018 Celeste Award winner Jerry Gidner – all about his passion for writing! Jerry generously donated his services as a raffle prize this season, and we’re excited to hear more about the result and his process.

Encore: Welcome back Jerry Gidner! Could you briefly remind our friends of the various roles in which you’ve served at Encore?
Jerry: Sure. I got involved with Encore when my daughter was cast in a show. Over the years, I was a parent volunteer for 13 Encore shows. A couple years after she started, I joined the Board of Directors, and served on the Board for seven years. For three of those, I was the President of the Board.

Encore: When did you fall in love with writing?
Jerry: I have always loved writing. I remember typing out stories on my mom’s typewriter back when I was in elementary school. I had a great imagination. Unfortunately, in a couple instances, teachers read things I had written out loud to the class, to embarrass me. So I became self conscious and lost my writing voice for many years.

Encore: We’re so thankful to have kicked off the season with this one-of-a-kind raffle! Can you tell us more about your services and the kinds of stories you provide?
Jerry: I recently started writing personal short stories for people for wedding gifts. The first one was for a family member. She and her fiancé were both graduating with oceanography degrees. So I wrote them a mermaid love story, called Saltwater. The next was for a friend. He and his fiancé wanted a superhero romance. So I wrote Love Blossoms, set at the tidal basin during cherry blossom time, which is where they took their engagement photos. Then I offered one for the Encore raffle, which is not a wedding story at all. My latest one was for a couple’s 30th Anniversary. Each book ends up being a hard-covered book around 24 pages, which is beautifully illustrated and laid out by a business partner of mine.

Encore: Could you briefly describe the original short story you wrote for the Ohlweiler family and the process of writing it? Can you tell us what you enjoyed the most from the process?
Jerry: This book, The Problem with Dragons, was fun to write. The Ohlweiler’s wanted a story about their kids in their own backyard. So I went to meet them and see the backyard. We had a great conversation. I started asking the kids what kind of story they wanted and we settled on a fight between a good dragon and an evil dragon. All three kids had a role in defeating the bad one, with a special role for their pet bunny Beatrix, who was turned into the good dragon by the kids’ magic.

Encore: Do you think you’ll ever write something for the stage?
Jerry: I would love to! Several years ago, I wrote an ABC book, called If You Were an Aardvark: An ABC Book Starring Mammals (available at www.xlibris.com). I have played around with turning it into a kids’ play, If You Were an Aardvark: The Musical. We’ll see.

Encore: How can others learn more about your writing services?
Jerry: Visit my website at www.jerrygidner.com. There are pages there for short stories and poems that I have written, as well as a page titled “Wedding Stories.” If you go to that page, you can find out how to order a book. They are not inexpensive, but they are a personalized story of the genre of your choosing. They are not limited to weddings. They can be for anniversaries, graduations, any big life event warranting a personalized present. Or just for no reason at all.
Thank you, once again, to Jerry for all of the time and service he’s dedicated to Encore over the years. If you’d like to get in on the chance to win an exciting prize, be sure to check out our Pinocchio raffle in the lobby over the next two weekends! Everyone’s a winner when it comes to seeing a great show. Secure your tickets today for your best seats, either online or by calling our Box Office at 703-548-1154. And make someone’s special day with a one-of-a-kind gift by Mr. Jerry Gidner!

Our 5 Favorites from April at Encore Stage & Studio
Happy #FrontRowFriday, everyone! Can you believe it’s almost halfway through May already? We’re so excited for everything the next few months have in store – Pinocchio, season reveal, Seussical, oh my! Before we get of ourselves, let’s review some of the fantastic highlights from Encore’s April.
#1 Spring classes kicked off! From Seuss-ian adventures to wacky tales from Wayside School, our students and teachers worked together to learn new theatre skills and, most of all, having a blast!
Missing out on the fun? It’s not too late to register for an Encore summer camp. We’ve got programs for ages 4 through 18, so there’s surely something for everyone!

#2 MTI presented a master-peach. Our Musical Theatre Intensive culminated in two weekends of wonderful performances, bringing Roald Dahl’s classic children’s tale to life. With beautiful voices, costumes, and puppets, it was a triumphant finale to an 8-month journey for MTI’s young actors.

Does this kind of artistic process sound appealing to you? Come out to our 2018/19 Season Reveal at Lubber Run on June 17th to learn what MTI’s final project will be next season!

#3 Susan is our champion! Artistic Director Susan Keady was named a 2018 Connect with Kids Champion by the Arlington Partnership for Children, Youth and Families. This came as no surprise to any of us who’ve been taught by, interacted with, or mentored by Susan, but it’s wonderful to have such a special person recognized by others.

If you’d like to join us in celebrate some more Encore champions, join us on the blog on June 8th for the announcement of the 2017/18 Star Award winners, then cheer them on in person on the 17th!

#4 We partied like it was 1967! Encore students, donors, and patrons joined us at the Columbus Club of Arlington for an evening of song, dance, and creative cocktail attire. Lucky winners walked away with fantastic prizes from the silent auction and we grossed over $50,000 in honor of 50 years of “Theatre by kids, for kids!”

If you too would like to be a champion for children’s theatre in the DMV, please consider making a tax-deductable donation to the Theatre for All! Fund today to increase access to the arts for children in our area.

#5 They’ve got no strings! The cast of Pinocchio has been hard at work in rehearsals as they prepare a lively and adventurous production for all of you. Opening night is just two weeks away and we just can’t wait!

Be sure to buy your tickets today to guarantee your best seats!
What a whirlwind month it was! We can’t wait to share the highlights of May with all of you – after we see you in the audience of Pinocchio, of course!

Happy Summer Faces with Kelsey Meiklejohn
Welcome back for another #TechTuesday! We hope you’re hungry for more of an inside look at what’s in store for our #EncoreSummer. Today we’re sitting down with Secondary Education Programs Manager Kelsey Meiklejohn to hear what’s giving her a “Happy Face.”
Encore: Which Encore camp(s) are you involved in this upcoming summer?
Kelsey Meiklejohn: Bye, Bye, Birdie YPE. I wish I could be involved in all of them, but I have one more summer of my Graduate Program!

Encore: What’s your favorite part of summer camp?
KM: My favorite part is hearing all of the ideas and creativity the students bring to the productions we put on at our Stage Door & Tech Camps. We always end up with some unique character moment or set piece that I would never have thought about. It is the students’ investment in the show that brings it to life, I am just glad I get to help guide us all working together!

Encore: What is the best memory you have from past camps you’ve worked on as staff?
KM: My favorite memory is the spirit days, especially seeing both students and teachers dress as their favorite musical characters. I remember one year the staff came as the Jets from West Side Story and I came in as The Little Redheaded Girl from You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown. There are so many unique characters and both the campers and staff get to learn about more musicals!

Encore: Did you attend a theatre/arts camp as a child? If so, what’s been the most lasting impression that experience has had on you?
KM: I got to attend an Arts & Science camp as a child, and loved seeing how the arts and sciences truly work together! I would do theatre or dance in the morning and then organic chemistry or physics in the afternoon. The diversity of thought in the program was great and when we needed a stage effect with a bubbling cauldron we could use what we learned in the science classroom the day before to make it. It really instilled in me the importance of learning everything you can, because then you can engage with so many different aspects of theatre or other disciplines.

Encore: What are you most looking forward to about this #EncoreSummer?
KM: I am looking forward to introducing students to one of my FAVORITE musicals! Bye, Bye, Birdie is full of youthful energy and silliness and fun and getting to share that with students already has me singing “Put on a Happy Face” in the car!
Your faces will match Kelsey’s happy one if you join us for Stage Door/Tech Camp this summer. Wave bye bye to Birdie, rescue a princess with Shrek, or fly off to Neverland – no matter which adventure you choose, you’ll be treated to three weeks of collaboration, creativity, and fun! Click here to sign up for a summer camp today.

So Much More! #SummerPlanningSunday with Madaline Langston
Happy #SummerPlanningSunday, Encore friends! This weekend we’re excited to share an interview with Education Programs Manager, Madaline Langston. You might remember our previous interview with Madaline, but today we’re looking ahead to 2018’s #EncoreSummer. We hope this sneak peek gets you ready to jump in!

Encore: Which Encore camp(s) are you involved in this upcoming summer?
Madaline Langston: This summer my focus will be on coordinating The Healthy Play Initiative. HPI is an ongoing partnership with the Arlington Food Assistance Center, serving ages 2-5 in the Arlington Community at Arlington Mill Community Center, as well as the Gates of Boston Community Center in the Buckingham area, while physically maintaining the daily operations of Encore’s partnership with Lola’s Lab and It’s Elementary summer camps. Lola’s Lab runs June 25th- July 6th. HPI and It’s Elementary will run thru the end of August.

What’s your favorite part of summer camp?
ML: My favorite part of camp is seeing the vision come to life and seeing the smiles and hearing the sounds of laughter of each camper.

What is the best memory you have from past camps you’ve worked on as staff?
ML: When I first began teaching at It’s Elementary many moons ago, the staff prepared talent to showcase for the campers. It was hilarious. This is now a tradition at the It’s Elementary camps. Every year each teacher brings a new talent to the stage.

Did you attend a theatre/arts camp as a child? If so, what’s been the most lasting impression that experience has had on you?
ML: I did not attend a Theater Arts Camp. When I was a child, I had many opportunities to perform in the school system. During the summer, as a Camp Fire girl, we would take trips to New York to see Broadway shows, go camping and other events in which we were encouraged to sing, participate in Arts and Crafts, swimming etc…

What are you most looking forward to about this #EncoreSummer?
ML: I am looking forward to observing the individual accomplishments achieved at our camps. Success looks different to each camper. Perhaps you attend our camps to make friends, develop confidence, overcome shyness, visual arts, performance, to learn about theatre and so much more.

Thank you for sharing your plans for your #EncoreSummer, Ms. Madaline! Still searching for your perfect summer theatre adventure? Fear not! We’ve got something for everyone – from pirates to Lost Boys and Shakespearean lords and ladies. With camps geared from ages 4-18, let this be the summer you dive into the theatrical deep end. Don’t be left on shore – click here to register today!

Positive and Professional! Summer Theatre with the Izdepskis
Happy #TechTuesday, Encore fans! We’re less than one week away from auditions for our wacky, hilarious, and fun-filled summer production of Seussical, so dust off your dancing shoes and we’ll see you there. In the meanwhile, we’ve got a double treat of an interview for you today. A father-daughter duo that always leaves us smiling…Erich and Evie Izdepski!

Encore: Welcome to the blog. Thanks for taking the time to chat with us. Please briefly introduce yourself and tell a bit about how you’ve been involved with Encore.
Evie: My name is Evie Izdepski and I am thirteen years old. I have been in several Encore shows and camps. Most recently, I appeared in Encore’s production of The Lion King Jr.
Erich: I performed in musicals when I was a teenager and took voice and piano. I never gave up music, but didn’t have a chance to do shows again until life settled down a little. 5 or 6 years ago, Evie and I began doing shows with the St. Andrews Players. Jane Massant runs the Players and is on the Encore board and I believe she told us about the shows. I have done two shows, Mary Poppins and The Music Man.

Encore: What inspired you to audition for your first Encore summer production?
Erich: I had been doing other shows with Evie and we heard about Mary Poppins, a show she loves, so we auditioned. I thought Admiral Boom or the head banker would be fun roles.
Evie: I was inspired to audition for Encore for the first time when I found out that they were doing Mary Poppins. It is one of my favorite shows and I was so excited that I started checking the website daily to see if kids were allowed to audition.

Encore: What is your favorite summer show memory?
Erich: Singing numbers with Evie on the way to rehearsals.
Evie: My favorite summer show memory is either racing my cast mates through the hallways when we were not rehearsing during Mary Poppins or playing around with the rest of kids’ ensemble during The Music Man. I can not decide.

Encore: What has prompted you to audition for multiple summer show experiences?
Evie: I’ve auditioned for multiple summer shows because it the first one was a really positive experience. Everyone was nice and it was very professional.
Erich: I really like classic musicals and Encore does great summer shows. It is a very professional organization – so enjoyable to work with them. Evie does shows throughout the year, but the summer one are special since you have a full range of ages in the cast. I think that inspires her.

Encore: What’s the best part about acting with your dad/daughter?
Evie: The best part about acting with my dad is that I have someone to go over music and lines with. I also get free rides to rehearsal.
Erich: Watching and helping Evie grow as a singer/actor/dancer. Well, I don’t help with the dancing (except I sometimes drive her to lessons!).

How wonderful to hear about your awesome summer theatre experiences, Evie and Erich! We love that you’re a part of our Encore production family. We hope that many friends, old and new, will be joining the ranks by auditioning for Seussical cast and crew next Monday and Tuesday!

5 Favorite Moments from the 50th Anniversary Bash
On Saturday, April 28, Encore Stage & Studio celebrated our 50th anniversary with an exciting event at the Columbus Club of Arlington. Check out our 5 favorite moments from the Bash:
#1 – The Amazing Collection of Auction Items
From travel packages to New York City, Chicago, and Seattle, to opening night experiences right here at Encore, we thank our wonderful auction donors (and bidders!) for a popular auction! Click here to view the full list of our silent auction items. We’re so happy for our auction and raffle winners!

#2 – Celebrating an Outstanding Volunteer, Jerry Gidner with the 2018 Celeste Award

We presented the 2018 Celeste Award to Jerry Gidner, an influential volunteer and former Board President of Encore Stage & Studio. The Celeste Award was established in honor of Encore’s long-time Executive Producer Celeste Groves, whose “celestial” record of volunteering gives us all a high standard to live up to. Under Jerry’s outstanding leadership from 2009-2016, Encore was able to grow and flourish. Jerry was instrumental in the development of two strategic plans and set forward a vision for the organization we have become. He served on the board for seven years, three as Board President, in addition to leading our Theatre for All! Fund campaign. He has worked diligently behind the scenes to take Encore to the next level. Encore would not be where it is today without the leadership and dedication of Jerry Gidner. Thank you Jerry!

#3 – The Dance Floor
“My favorite part of the night was watching the kids have fun on the dance floor,” says Rosemarie O’Connor, Development Associate. We kicked off the dance party with a favorite from the soundtrack of “The Greatest Showman.” We all sang showtunes, showed off our dance skills and had a ball!

#4 – The Encore Family Reunion

Not only were we walking down the red carpet, we also strolled down memory lane! Alumni came from near and far to attend the event, including out of the country! The evening program was filled with performances from current students and Alumni. Photos of past shows over the decades filled the walls! Show posters and programs were on full display throughout the venue. We also had alumni there in spirit with heartfelt messages on video.
Check out this awesome video message from Encore Alum, Brittany O’Grady:
Brittany currently stars in the FOX show, “Star.” Click here to check out her last Encore interview.
It was a fantastic evening to celebrate our birthday with Encore participants past and present.
#5 – The wonderful support from the community
“My favorite moment was greeting all of our guests, volunteers and community members from other Arlington organizations and seeing everyone come together to celebrate and support ‘Theatre by Kids, for Kids,'” says Sara Duke, Executive Director. We had over 240 guests at the bash and grossed over $50,000 in honor of our 50th anniversary!

“Encore gave us a place to be our true selves, express who we are, find friends and feel at home and safe while learning. Encore is Glorious!” –Encore participant, Nick B.
Encore Stage & Studio was founded in Arlington, VA in 1967. Since that time we have produced 215 shows, and almost 375,000 patrons have attended a production. Thank you to our Encore volunteers, staff and donors for a beautiful celebration!
Missed the Bash? You can still make a meaningful donation! Click here to donate online today.
Save the date for our Community Birthday Celebration on Sunday, June 17, 2018 at Lubber Run Amphitheater. Click here to learn more. See you there!

Susan Keady Named 2018 Connect with Kids Champion
We’ve got a very exciting #TechTuesday for you today, folks. Whether you’ve auditioned for one of her shows, worked on a monologue with her one-on-one, or been cheered on by her at the Costume Caper 5K, you know that Artistic Director Susan Keady makes every person feel special.
For anyone who has had the pleasure of working with Susan, it will come as no surprise that she has been named a 2018 Connect With Kids Champion by the Arlington Partnership for Children, Youth and Families. The APCYF describes this honor in the following manner: “What sets a CWK Champion apart is their intentional and deliberate attentiveness to the needs of young people. In recognizing community Champions, we celebrate adults who make the time to build relationships with children and teens.”

“I love when alumni students come back to see a production and stay to report to Susan about their first speech they gave in a public speaking class, the role they got cast in in their university’s production, or hearing about how their leadership skills from Encore got them a promotion at work,” says Sara Duke, Encore Executive Director. “Susan’s work to create a community with all of her casts shows when kids come back and reunite at the next Encore production or sign-up to audition for the next show.”
We are so lucky and proud to call Susan such an essential part of our Encore family. She has been a crucial creator, a Geppetto to our Pinocchio, if you will, shaping the history of “Theatre by kids, for kids” here in Arlington. Click here to catch up on one of our previous interview with Susan.
The award presentation will be held on Thursday, May 10 from 7:00pm-8:30pm in the lower level Auditorium of Stambaugh Hall, the main DHS building (2100 Washington Blvd). The program will begin at 7:30pm. Please RSVP with Michael Swisher at mswish@arlingtonva.us.

Congratulations again, Susan. To us, you’ll always be the cat’s meow!
