Keeping Healthy in the New Year with HPI

Holidays greetings from Encore! If you’re anything like us, the holidays have been full of wonderful meetings with family or friends, festive fun, and, of course, more than a yummy treat or two. While it can be lovely to indulge during a celebration, we wanted to chat with the ambassadors for our Healthy Play Initiative (HPI) to ask for some tips as we look toward the New Year and our resolutions.
img_0429

Encore: Hello! Please introduce yourselves.

Enrique: Hello! My name is Eat Healthy Enrique.
Mona: And I’m Get Moving Mona!

Encore: What are your favorite things to do?

Mona: I love to dance and exercise. I also have a beautiful voice. I sing like the birds. My voice soars high above the trees.
Enrique: I enjoy trying new foods. I also love to sing songs of joy and happiness with my friends.

img_3964
What about your favorite things to eat and drink?

Enrique: When you look into my refrigerator, you will see all kinds of foods from the five food groups. But my favorite food is fish! And, of course, you need water. What fish doesn’t need water?

Mona: What?
Enrique: What? It makes sense!

Mona: I like to keep it natural. I’m happy with chicken, brown rice, carrot, apples, and milk. Not necessarily in that order.

Encore: What do you like most about coming to visit at HPI?

Enrique: I love seeing the children every week; they make me laugh and we have a lot of fun. They share their favorite foods each week. It helps me create new recipes.

Mona: I too love hearing the sounds of laughter and encouraging them to keep moving. At the end of class, it is so wonderful to ask the kids about which activities they participated in. They tell me everything, from jumping, hopping, hula hooping, singing, dancing, all kinds of fun and games!

Encore: How can our readers join in on the fun?
img_3947

Enrique: Join us at the Gates of Balston, every Friday from 1pm-3pm.
Mona: But come prepared to move and have FUN!

img_3966
Encore: What are you most looking forward to over the holidays?

Enrique: I can’t wait to try out some new healthy recipes! I hope the children will share some of their favorite foods with me in the New Year.

Mona: I can’t wait to spend time with friends and family. And to work on some new dance routines!

Encore: What are some of your top New Year’s resolutions to share with our readers?

Mona: Life is beautiful! Treat your body right. Get plenty of exercise and rest.
Enrique: Know that change is possible. Eat to live. And, of course, stay healthy!

Thank you so much for sharing about HPI and your tips for living healthily in the new year, Mona and Enrique! To learn more about the Healthy Play Initiative, please click here. If you and your young ones would like to learn more about making positive food choices, be sure to mark your calendars for Encore’s very first Theatre for the Very Young production, Kitchen Adventures, premiering February 9, 2017!

Encore Announces Stage Door & Tech Camp Musicals for Summer 2017!

There is so much to look forward to this summer, especially Stage Door and Tech Camp! Cue the drum roll. The Stage Door musicals are:
dsc_0257

Session 1: Singin’ in the Rain Jr.
It’s 1927 and Don Lockwood and Lina Lamont are Hollywood’s biggest movie stars. When “talkies” take over town, though, the studio is forced to turn their latest silent film into a hit movie musical. There’s just one problem—the leading lady can’t sing, dance, or act! Comedy, romance, and stormy weather collide in this beloved show featuring classic songs like “Make ’em Laugh,” “Good Morning,” and of course, “Singin’ in the Rain.”

Session 2: The Little Mermaid Jr.

Though Ariel lives a comfortable life as undersea royalty, she longs for excitement and exploration. When the sea witch Ursula offers her a chance to try out life as a human, this mermaid trades her fins for legs. But the bargain she strikes is exceptionally risky; will Ariel easily adapt to life on land, or will her experiment cause the collapse of her family’s kingdom? This classic tale includes a marvelous cast of colorful characters who help–and hinder–Ariel’s quest to fit in, stand out, and find her place in the world. With beloved songs like “Under the Sea” and “Part of Your World,” this memorable musical is sure to be a swimming success.

Now cue the applause! Camp Director Caroline Schreiber gives us the scoop on what to expect for our Summer 2017!
dsc_0255

What’s your process for choosing shows for Stage Door?
Caroline: As soon as Labor Day is over, we start thinking about summer programming for the next year. This year, I read so many scripts for Stage Door! We usually choose a Junior script, which is a lightly edited version of a well-known musical. Not all Junior scripts are created equal, though, so when I read, I’m careful to look for a variety of things. First, I look for a fun show with enough roles for at least 30 performers, and moments for everyone to shine. If the ensemble is boring or non-existent, it immediately gets knocked off my list. Then, I look for enough musical and choreographic difficulty to keep the actors engaged; if there’s no harmony and no dancing, it’s not the right show for Stage Door. I also look for interesting technical elements, including costumes, scenery, and any special effects we might need to be able to pull off. And I pay attention to the plot and themes, thinking about whether what’s happening onstage is a good match for the interests and sensibilities of our students and audience members. Once I’ve found those things, I usually re-read any scripts I like to really get into the details—how will each performer, technician, or designer be involved? Will there be enough to keep everyone busy throughout each camp day? What can everyone learn from this script, and how will it make use of everyone’s talents while also helping them to grow? I also pay attention to what images pop into my head while I’m reading. If I can picture a scene or a song on stage and get excited about what I’m visualizing, I know I’m on the right track!

As Camp Director, what do you look forward to the most every year from Stage Door?
Caroline: Getting into the material! I love directing, and I love working with this age group. The students who sign up for Stage Door and Tech Camp always have tons of energy and ideas. It’s really fun for me to get to channel that into a great production each summer, and to discover moments or concepts I might not have thought of without their insights.

What life skills do you see shine through from campers in this summer camp?
Caroline: Confidence. Theatre involves putting yourself out there, which can be a scary thing to do, especially in middle or high school. Whether it’s acting in a scene, mastering a dance step, singing by yourself in front of the whole room, or suggesting a design idea, the confidence to give it a go is vital. I hope that Stage Door and Tech Camp create a supportive environment for students to build this skill every summer.

Stage Door Beauty and the Beast

Along with confidence, I see students develop the willingness to try something new. Sometimes this is driven by their own desires, and sometimes it involves our staff encouraging growth. In either case, I try to advance the idea that if an experiment fails, it’s not a big deal. Theatre is all about experimenting—learning what works well for both the show and the audience. As theatre-makers, we’re challenged to constantly come up with ideas, try them out, and then be unafraid to change it up when something doesn’t work.

dsc_0308

Teamwork. Theatre really is the embodiment of that Three Musketeers motto, “All for one, and one for all.” In improv, you’re taught that your goal is to make your scene partner look good. That’s absolutely true in any production; everyone has to pull together with a common goal of creating the best possible show. When that sense of teamwork is truly embodied, everyone gets a chance to shine.

For campers returning to Stage Door and Tech Camp, what do you think they will enjoy the most this year? For those who are new to the camp and musical theatre, what can they get excited for?
Caroline: For returning students, there are always new challenges to be tackled. (This year, they involve the technical complication of making it rain onstage!) Our staff also actively looks for ways to stretch returning students, whether by casting them as a type they haven’t played before, or putting them in charge of a new crew assignment, like running the light board or calling the show.

stage door 13 willy

For new students, I honestly hope that everything is exciting. When you love theatre, there’s nothing better than being given a chance to actually do some theatre, whether that’s acting, singing, sketching costumes, constructing scenery, dancing, etc. There’s also the chance to meet new friends and grow as a performer or designer.

dsc_0464

How are the two musicals different and similar? What new challenges do you see in these two shows?
Singin’ in the Rain Jr. and The Little Mermaid Jr. are similar in that they’re both great musicals—really fun characters, wonderful songs, amazing dance moments. I’m psyched to direct both of them.

In both, there are obvious technical challenges—how do we make it appear as though water is falling from the sky indoors? How does a mermaid propel herself around the stage, when the stage is obviously not a giant aquarium tank? (There’s another similarity—they both involve water!)

I’m also looking forward to creating the “world” of both shows. Singin’ in the Rain takes place in a very particular historical moment—Hollywood in 1927, just as “The Jazz Singer” was premiering—and it’s actually a spoof of what was going on in the film industry at that time. The Little Mermaid, on the other hand, involves a fairytale-like setting, which gives the actors and designers a lot of creative license.

dsc_0447

Beyond the particular elements specific to these shows, though, the most important challenge every year is to make sure every student has fun and gains something from the camp experience.

Anything else you’d like to share?
Caroline: From the length of this post, you can probably tell I’m excited. Click the photo below for more info about how to sign up to play with us this summer!

Give an #EncoreHigh5 This #GivingTuesday!

Happy #GivingTuesday, Encore family! We hope that you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday. We here at Encore Stage & Studio are so excited to kick off the holiday giving season with #GivingTuesday!
2016-gt-logo-wdate1

Since this is our first year participating in #GivingTuesday, we wanted to share some Q&As that may come to your mind as you consider your charitable giving options this holiday season.

What is #GivingTuesday?
#GivingTuesday is a global day of philanthropy, organized to kick off the holiday giving season. The event started five years ago and has grown in size every year since. This year, #GivingTuesday takes place today,, Tuesday, November 29th, 2016.
facebook-profile-gt

How will Encore benefit from my #GivingTuesday donation?
Encore uses donations to help share the magic of theatre with every child in the community. Your donation could help us provide a scholarship to summer camp for a child in need, commission a brand new play like Cul de Sac, hire ASL interpreters for an upcoming performance, create costumes for The Jungle Book, and more. Generous donors like you make Encore’s programs possible!

Why should I support Encore?
Encore has had a presence in the Arlington community for nearly 50 years. Throughout that time, we’ve remained committed to our mission of “theatre by kids, for kids,” introducing children and families to the performing arts and helping students to build self-confidence, develop leadership skills, practice empathy and teamwork, and much more. Encore isn’t only a theatre company; we’re also a fun, supportive space for children to be themselves and for families to connect with each other and the community.

I don’t have a lot to give. Is my donation still worthwhile?
All donations make a difference! To extend the impact of your donation, consider encouraging friends and family to give through our #EncoreHigh5 campaign. After you give, tag five friends on social media to encourage them to join you in giving back to the community this season. On #GivingTuesday, Encore will have a chance to win $5,000 from the Catalogue for Philanthropy for receiving the largest number of gifts from individual donors!
dsc_0767

I’m not able to donate at this time, but how else can I help?
We’d love it if you could help us spread the word about Encore and all our great programs, including classes, camps, productions, and community partnerships like the AFAC Healthy Play Initiative. Encourage a friend to take a class with you or try out for a show, post about Encore on social media, or give the gift of theatre by buying a season subscription as a holiday gift for a neighbor, friend, or family member.

Awesome! I’m ready to give! How do I contribute?
Head on over to our campaign page to do your part to cultivate “Theatre by kids, for kids” this holiday season!

Save the Date for #GivingTuesday: November 29th, 2016

The seven dwarves welcomes Snow White! Photo by Aileen Pangan
With the successful conclusion of our first-ever Costume Caper 5K this past weekend, the holiday giving season already has us kicking up our heels here at Encore. While you won’t find us wearing Santa hats or decking the halls quite yet, we do want you to mark your calendars for Tuesday, November 29th, 2016. This is a very exciting day for Encore, as it will be the first time that we have participated in the nationwide event Giving Tuesday.
11-29-2016
Entering its fifth year, this event serves to focus consumers back to the generous nature of the holiday season, especially in light of the chaotic swirl of markdowns and deals often brought about by Black Friday and Cyber Monday. Over 700,000 donors contributed to Giving Tuesday campaigns in 2015 alone!

The holiday season isn’t the only thing creating a buzz around the Encore offices. We are already full of plans and anticipation as we prepare to enter our 50th anniversary season! Inspired by the spirit and the success of Giving Tuesday, we felt that this would be a fantastic way to kick off and celebrate Encore’s 50th year of making “Theatre by kids, for kids!”
DSC_0106

If you are interested in becoming an author of Encore’s next chapter, please keep Giving Tuesday in mind as you consider your plan for holiday giving. To honor Encore’s 50th anniversary, it is our goal to have 50 donors give $50 over the course of the Giving Tuesday campaign. Our homepage for the event will be found here – be sure to bookmark it! Be a holiday hero and support the growth of young artists!
Encore Stage & Studio's Cul de Sac opens through June 12 at Thomas Jefferson Community Theatre.
As with any of our shows and events, our Encore family is our biggest asset when it comes to sharing the news. In the days leading up to the campaign, we encourage you to help us “friend-raise” by sharing our donation page with five friends, using the tags #GivingTuesday and #EncoreHigh5. Stay tuned on this blog for more tips and resources that will help you share your love for “Theatre by kids, for kids!”

Top 5 Reasons We Are Thankful for “Theatre By Kids, For Kids” This #GivingTuesday

We just can’t believe that Thanksgiving is a week away! As they say, time flies when you’re having fun, and it’s been quite the exciting season for Encore so far. From The Best Haunted House Ever to our first-ever Costume Caper 5K, we’ve been having a blast – it’s no wonder the time has taken off on us!

We couldn’t be more thrilled for the holiday season to begin, because that means that #GivingTuesday is right around the corner! As this day of philanthropy approaches, we want to take a moment to consider why we are so thankful to have Encore Stage & Studio in our lives.

#1: Encore provides an artistic home for theatre-makers of all ages.
babytoddlerclasses-banner-tuesmorning
Our philosophy is that it is never too early to start developing a love for theatre. We’ve recently begun to offer a new series of Baby and Toddler classes to cater to the youngest artists among us. Encore offers camps and classes for students of all ages up to 18. The fun, however, does not stop there! Encore alumni are always encouraged to stay involved through the annual summer musical, and some have even remained a part of the Encore family as teaching artists!

#2: Encore is a part of the Arlington community.
Healthy Play Initiative
Our goals extend beyond connecting with people as audience members to have a broader impact within our community. This desire to make connections leads us to partnering with other stellar institutions to create programs that will have a positive impact on our neighbors. We are certainly thankful for our collaboration with the Arlington Food Assistance Center (AFAC) to create a Healthy Play Initiative for the children of the Buckingham neighborhood at the Gates of Ballston, encouraging nutritious eating habits and an active lifestyle.

#3: Young leaders emerge through the Encore experience.
dsc_0464
Here at Encore, our students lead the way. Overseen by an adult director, our high school stage managers tackle the enormous responsibility of organizing and running a full-scale production. In recent seasons, we’ve been lucky to have several students step up to tackle design roles on our shows. The dedication, focus, organization, and presence required for these positions are just a few of the innumerable skills young artists acquire by taking on leadership roles in Encore productions.

#4: Innovation drives us forward!
Artwork by Richard Thompson
Resting on laurels, wonderful though they may be, just doesn’t cut it for us here at Encore. We are constantly finding ways to expand and grow as an organization. We achieve this through new classes and camps, new events (like our Costume Caper 5K), and even the commissioning of new plays for the children’s theatre canon.

#5: Celebrating 50 years of “Theatre by Kids, for Kids!”
Beauty and the Beast, Photo by Rosemarie O'Connor
What an amazing thing to be thankful for! Encore has been serving the Arlington community since 1967 and we couldn’t be more thrilled to share our upcoming 50th season with all of you and your families.

That’s a Wrap! Encore’s Costume Caper 5K A Success

Costume Caper 5K
Encore volunteers and staff members were thrilled to be joined by over 70 runners on Saturday, November 5th for Encore Stage & Studio’s first ever Costume Caper 5K and 1 mile kids’ run!

Costume Caper 5K
Costume Caper 5K shirts
Participants and volunteers began to gather in Arlington’s Bluemont Park at around 7AM to begin set-up and registration. Runners were all very excited to receive these awesome and unique Encore t-shirts as part of their sign-up package.

While the morning air was a bit brisk as the sun rose, Encore Registrar and MTI director, Kelsey Meiklejohn, led our runners in some fun dancing warm-ups to get the blood flowing. (To check out our Broadway-themed 5K playlist, click here!)

As our clocks approached 8:30, Encore’s Executive Director, Sara Duke, took up the mic to act as MC for the festivities. The kids’ 1 mile fun run was up first, and the contestants were decked out in their costume and ready to go. Fellow runners acted their parts of enthusiastic spectators well as the group took off and again, as the pack returned across the finish line.
Costume Caper kids' fun run

But the fun didn’t stop at the finish line! Younger racers also got to take advantage of the varied activities of the Kids’ Zone, ranging from face painting, lawn games, and even a bounce house! Such riches surely caused even the grown runners to be a bit green with envy.
Costume Caper 5K Kelsey
Around 8:45, all of the Capers above age ten assembled to prepare for the 5K. A hilarious sequence of songs, including ABBA’s “Dancing Queen,” got the runners in the festive mood. Then finally…they were off! Spectators began to see finishers around the 23 minute mark, with the majority of participants completing the out-and-back course in 50 minutes or less.

A variety of prizes were awarded for both top finishers and for costumes. Costume categories included most frightening costume, most creative costume, sweetest costume, best couple’s costume, and more! Prizes were generously donated by local businesses.

We want to say a special thanks to all of our participants, volunteers, staff members, and sponsors for making this a fantastic first 5K experience. Overall, Encore raised a total of $750 through registrations and donations. This news, on top of the incredibly fun day we all had, has us jumping for joy! We can’t wait to put on another 5K event next year, and we look forward to seeing you at the starting line too!

Keeping Us in Stitches: Costume Creations with Emma Berry

1200x630-graphic-image-aftcc

Still searching for last-minute costume inspiration for today’s spooky festivities? Have no fear! We were able to chat with Emma Berry, who is designing the costumes, make-up, and props for our upcoming production of A Fairy Tale Christmas Carol.

Encore: Can you introduce yourself (where you graduated, past theatre experience)?
Emma: I started with theatre as a child and found a passion for it immediately. I acted all through high school, but upon entering college reevaluated my role in the theatre and switched to the technical side of things. There were many changes in my focus along the way, but I graduated from Christopher Newport University in May of 2016 with my BA in theatrical arts and a focus on costume design.
emma-headshot-ish

Encore: How have/are you involved with Encore?
Emma: I originally started with Encore as an educational intern two summers ago. I found that I loved the company and all it stood for, and was thrilled when I was invited to join the staff this past summer. I worked as a teaching artist for the Stage Door tech camps. After camp ended, I was invited to stay on to take care of properties for the full season, and costumes for a few of the shows.

Encore: What’s the most complex costume you’ve ever had to create?
Emma: The most complex costume was my senior thesis. My college was putting on a production of Macbeth, set in a post-apocalyptic environment. I was the makeup designer for the entire cast, as well as designer for Lady MacDuff’s costume. While the costume itself wasn’t much out of the ordinary, it required many steps that made it quite a stressful yet rewarding venture.

Encore: What’s been your favorite show to costume design so far?
Emma: My favorite show to design for was Anything Goes, with Encore’s Stage Door summer camp. I have a sweet spot for historical accuracy, and it was a real treat to be able to dress our actors in the high-level society fashion of that time.
Stage Door Anything Goes

Encore: What was the most difficult show you’ve ever worked on?
Emma: The most difficult was probably Beauty and the Beast (also with Stage Door). While the show allowed many opportunities for imaginative design, the fantasy nature of the production presented unique challenges. Luckily, I had a very talented group of campers to help!
Stage Door Beauty and the Beast
Encore: Do you have a dream show that you want to costume?
Emma: I would love to costume Pippin one day. The script is constructed in such a way to allow for highly-stylized design choices, and I would love to have that freedom.

Encore: Could you describe your design process for us?
Emma: The very first things I take into account before beginning designs are the historical accuracy and the practicality of each costume. The process begins with copious research, from which I draw my initial inspiration. After that, I do my best to get to know the actors within the roles, to tailor the costumes toward their specific personalities when possible. Then all that’s left is to add in the details!

Encore: Any tips for creative Halloween costumes?
Emma: Do something you’re excited about. Truly amazing costumes can be created on little to no budget with just a little bit of imagination and elbow grease, but if you aren’t excited about it, the costume will reflect that. You can add detail and excitement with some creative makeup tricks or hairstyles. Lastly, a big smile will make any costume stand out.

Join us this Saturday to put these costume tips to the test during Encore’s first ever Costume Caper 5K! There is still time to register and join in on the fun.
